Day 1 of our campaign has kicked off!
Students currently owe $28 billion in student loans; a number that steadily increases each year. As a student coalition that represents over 250,000 students across the country, we know the importance of equitable and accessible post-secondary education.
We are lobbying for:
1) Implementation of a two-year grace period on all federal student loans
2) Doubling of federal investments in the Canada Student Grants Program

Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a plan to invest $2 billion to connect roughly 750,000 homes and small businesses to broadband internet.
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how the digital divide further decreases the accessibility of post-secondary education. Canadians need access to fast, reliable and affordable internet to learn, work, socialize and access government services. By investing in internet accessibility, the Government of Canada is decreasing barriers to post-secondary education.

On September 23, 2020, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, delivered the Speech from the Throne to open the second session of the 43rd Parliament and outline the government’s agenda. Though the speech outlined the Government of Canada’s plan for post-COVID-19 recovery, there was no mention of students or post-secondary education. UCRU is disappointed in this lack of recognition, as the economic uncertainty brought on by COVID-19 holds significant potential to negatively impact our 250,000 members and the over 1 million university students across Canada.
