Travelling to Canada
The following travel arrangements are important to consider:
Be sure of your travel dates and make sure you know what time you need to be at the airport. International flights usually require check-in at least two or three hours prior to the scheduled departure.
Know the airline’s baggage limitations. Check how much baggage you are allowed to take with you and be mindful of weight restrictions.
Remember to clearly tag all of your baggage, with your name and the complete address of your destination in Canada. Also, pack a card inside your luggage with your Canadian contact details.
Know where you will be staying when you arrive in Canada and how you will get there from the airport.
Carry some local currency for any transit destinations. Some countries require you to pay airline taxes in transit, which may not have been included in your ticket cost. Having local currency is also useful to purchase a snack or beverage along the way.
Travel with enough Canadian currency (cash or traveller’s cheques)
Remember to keep all important documents, medications and high-value items such as cameras, jewellery, laptops, phones, credit cards and cash with you–do not pack these items in your checked baggage.
Carry these items and all other valuable papers, cash and cheques with you at all times. Do not put them in your checked luggage.
What to expect when you arrive at a Port of Entry
All travelers arriving in Canada are obligated by Canadian law to:
* Present themselves to a border services officer,
* Respond truthfully to all questions
* Accurately report their goods.
You will receive a Declaration Card while you are on board the aircraft (or other means of transportation) and you must complete the declaration card before you arrive in Canada. Be sure to keep the declaration card handy along with your identification and other travel documents. You will be asked to show this card several times after you get off the plane.
Please ensure you have the following documents available to show to immigration and customs officials:
A Canadian Visitor Visa or Study Permit
A Valid Passport or Travel Document
Either a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or visitor visa (temporary resident visa)
If you have a valid eTA, it’ll be linked to the passport you used to apply for your study permit.
The Letter of Introduction the visa office sent you when they approved your study permit (This letter has your permit reference number which is used to issue your study permit)
Your valid Letter of Acceptance to Algonquin College
Proof that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in Canada
A detailed list of all of your personal or household items you are bringing with you or have shipped separately
The address of where you are going to live (if applicable)
