We can fund much needed public services like the Richmond Public Library while being responsible with public dollars. Every dollar spent on lawsuits, mismanagement, and gift cards is a dollar that should be spent on programs and services that people need.

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Orange Shirt Day.

Today, we remember the Survivors of the residential school system, the children who never returned home, and the families and communities who continue to carry this pain.

Orange Shirt Day is a grassroots campaign founded by Phyllis Webstad to raise awareness about the impacts of the residential school system. The orange shirt has become a symbol of hope, reconciliation, and a shared commitment to a better future.

Together, we reflect on the history and lasting impacts of residential schools on Indigenous Peoples, and engage in meaningful learning and action in support of reconciliation.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation we honour the victims and survivors of Canada’s residential school system and their descendants who still live with the aftermath of cultural genocide and intergenerational trauma inflicted upon them.

We remain committed to enacting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. They are especially crucial in this time as we see a rise in residential school denialism and those that are profiting off of spreading misinformation and hate, as well as the recent gathering of white supremacists on a First Nations’ reserve in BC. Our hearts are also with Tsawassen Nation today.

We must all come together to honour the survivors and make sure that the truth of the residential school system and the history of indigenous people on the lands now known as Richmond are taught and passed on.
