Over the past several weeks, we've highlighted the five priority areas of the Aylmer-Elgin-St. Thomas Community Safety and Well-Being Plan: Housing Security, Mental Health and Well-Being, Public Safety, Substance Use and Addiction, and Education and Skills Development.

While each priority area has its own goals and initiatives, they are all connected. The CSWB Integration Table brings together representatives from each priority area, municipalities, police services, and community partners to share information, coordinate efforts, and identify opportunities to work together on complex community issues.

By connecting organizations and aligning efforts across these priority areas, the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan helps strengthen collaboration and support healthier, safer, and more resilient communities across the Town of Aylmer, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas.

Education & Skills Development is one of the five priority areas identified in the Aylmer-Elgin-St. Thomas Community Safety and Well-Being Plan. Education and skills development can help people access new opportunities and improve their overall well-being.

Through this priority area, community partners are working together to help people of all ages learn, build skills, and access opportunities to succeed in school, work, and life. The goal is to ensure more people have the skills they need to thrive and can access education, training, and employment opportunities.

Community organizations are advancing this work by helping residents develop skills, access training programs, and connect with employment opportunities. Partners involved include the Workforce Planning and Development Board, Fanshawe Career and Employment Services, Employment Services Elgin, and YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin.

Over the coming months, we'll be highlighting local programs, services, initiatives, and partnerships that are helping people build skills and access opportunities across the Town of Aylmer, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas. 🛞 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗔𝘆𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗶𝗿𝗲 🛞

Celebrating 49 years in business, 𝗔𝘆𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗶𝗿𝗲 has been a trusted part of the Aylmer community for generations. The business dates back to the 1930s, with 𝗟𝘆𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 purchasing the business in 1977. Today, their granddaughter, 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀, along with co-owners 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗼𝗻 and 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗹 𝗦𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗵, continues the family tradition, making Aylmer Tire a three-generation business.

Since 1977, Aylmer Tirecraft has continued to grow and evolve. After moving to its current location in 1989, the business expanded from a five-bay auto shop into a 𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, adding 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀 and a 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 in 2008. Today, the team of 15 provides tire sales and service for a wide range of vehicles, along with mechanical repairs and aftermarket accessories.

At the heart of Aylmer Tire is a commitment to 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝘀. The team serves everything from cars and pickup trucks to tractors, transport trucks, ATVs, lawnmowers and more, while continually adapting to new technology and changing customer needs. They are also proud to 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 that has supported them, sponsoring local initiatives including the Aylmer splash pad, East Elgin Community Complex and East Elgin Secondary School programs.

For Janna, continuing the business is about more than running a successful company — it is about carrying forward her grandparents’ passion and honouring the community that has supported Aylmer Tire for nearly five decades.

𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

This morning, Warden Dominique Giguère, MP Andrew Lawton, MPP Rob Flack, members of Council, and staff gathered at the Elgin County Heritage Centre to raise the Every Child Matters flag in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

During her remarks, Warden Giguère reflected on the survivors of residential schools who were made to feel afraid or ashamed to speak about what they experienced. For some, it took decades before they felt able to share their stories. Their courage has helped Canadians better understand the truth about the residential school system and the harm it continues to cause.

This history is neither distant nor disconnected from the communities we call home. The last residential school in Canada closed less than 30 years ago. Here in our region, the Mount Elgin Industrial Institute operated from 1851 to 1946 on what is now Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, just minutes from the Elgin County communities of Southwold and Dutton Dunwich.

Truth is an essential part of reconciliation. We share a responsibility to listen to Indigenous voices, learn about what happened, honour the children who never returned home, and recognize the strength of survivors, their families, and their communities.

As we raise the Every Child Matters flag, Elgin County reaffirms its responsibility to carry this learning forward and help build more respectful relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities.

If you are a resident of Elgin County or the City of St. Thomas and enrolled in an accredited medical school, you may be eligible for the 2026 Medical Student Scholarship offered by the Elgin-St. Thomas Health Recruitment Partnership.

The scholarship supports local students as they complete their medical education and encourages future physicians to consider returning to our region to practice.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for the 2026 AccessAbility Open House!

Throughout the afternoon, attendees connected with local organizations, explored exhibits, learned about resources available in our community, and shared conversations about accessibility and inclusion. The event also featured a wheelchair basketball demonstration and a musical performance by the talented young performers from Dreams Come True Music Studio.

A special thank you to the St. Thomas Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee and the Elgin County-Central Elgin Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee for organizing the event. We are also grateful to the volunteers, vendors, community partners, performers, sign language interpreter, and everyone else who helped make the open house possible.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions, shared their experiences, and helped strengthen the conversation about creating communities where everyone can participate.

Substance Use & Addiction is one of the five priority areas identified in the Aylmer-Elgin-St. Thomas Community Safety and Well-Being Plan. Substance use and addiction can have health and social impacts for people, families, and communities. Drug-related illness and deaths remain a serious concern, and alcohol-related hospitalizations have increased across our region.

Through this priority area, community partners are working together to create a caring, inclusive, and safe community that promotes health and well-being while reducing the harms and stigma associated with substance use. This includes preventing substance use and related harms before they occur, reducing health and social impacts, and helping people access the care and supports they need.

Current efforts include using community data to identify priorities that support youth, increasing awareness of opioid-related harms through community education, and improving access to care by strengthening service provider knowledge and expanding access to mental health and substance use supports.

Over the coming months, we'll be highlighting local programs, services, initiatives, and partnerships that are helping support community safety and well-being across the Town of Aylmer r, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas.
