The term q***r can denote same-gender attraction or reflect more complex dynamics between one’s s*x, gender, and attraction experiences. Despite the term’s earlier historical uses as a slur, many individuals in the 2SLGBTQI community have claimed the word for themselves as a sense of empowerment, finding it an appropriate label for self-identifying.

In 1993, Egale Canada launched a high-profile national campaign during the Canadian federal election, which included an MP questionnaire and an election tabloid that sought to hold candidates accountable for their positions on 2SLGBTQI issues. This campaign informed voters on candidate positions, raised awareness of the lack of legal protections for gay and le***an Canadians, and pressured parties to include equality rights in their platforms.
This is 40 Years of Progress. This is what it takes to build — and defend — equality.

On May 24, 1995, an Ontario Court judge ruled that denying same-s*x couples the right to adopt jointly violated Section 15 (equality rights) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The decision made Ontario the first Canadian province to make it legal for same-s*x couples to adopt, followed closely by British Columbia, Alberta and Nova Scotia. In the next 16 years, the rest of Canada did the same.

Yesterday, Egale Canada met with key national 2SLGBTQI partners, including Society of Q***r Momentum, Pride at Work Canada / Fierté au travail Canada, Community-Based Research Centre - CBRC, and Fierté Canada Pride, for an impactful meeting with Senator Kristopher Wells at Parliament Hill, Ottawa.
AJ Adams, Manager of Communications at Egale, joined insightful discussions focused on the current issues facing 2SLGBTQI communities across Canada and the importance of continued collaboration between Canada’s 2SLGBTQI organizations and the Pride Caucus to advance equity, inclusion, and human rights.
Thank you to our partners for the opportunity to work alongside them in meaningful conversations and collaborative advocacy.

We're pleased to share that Egale Canada was invited to attend and address key issues related to Canada’s international human rights obligations at the Federal, Provincial, and Territorial (FPT) Forum of Ministers on Human Rights Day of Dialogue, May 20, 2026, in Regina, Saskatchewan.
While there, Kim Vance-Mubanga, Egale's Director, Programs and Partnerships, engaged in joint panel discussions with Indigenous representatives, human rights commissions, youth leaders, and civil society groups on the significance of upholding human rights and inclusion to inspire cultural change.
We're proud to join this necessary conversation, while sharing our expertise on 2SLGBTQI issues and the urgent need to improve the response to growing anti-2SLGBTQI violence seen across Canada.
