The First Female Pilot Shot Down in Combat-Her Story
Captain Kimberly N. Hampton was only 27-but she was already exactly where she was meant to be. From the time she was 3 years old, she dreamed of flying. She chased it relentlessly-ROTC at Presbyterian College, commanding cadets, leading with quiet confidence. She wasn't loud, but she didn't need to be. Her presence spoke for her. In a world where few women stood in her role, she earned something stronger than rank-respect. To her soldiers, she wasn't just a commander... she was Dark Horse Six.
She had already served in Korea and Afghanistan before deploying to Iraq in August 2003. On January 2, 2004, over Fallujah, Captain Hampton was piloting an OH-58 Kiowa reconnaissance helicopter-doing exactly what she loved. Then came the enemy fire. The aircraft was struck and crashed. Even in her final moments, those who knew her said the same thing-she was doing everything right. She didn't hesitate. She didn't falter. She flew straight into the mission, just like she always had.
Before war, she once wrote to her mother: "If anything ever happens to me... I'm doing the things I love." And she was. Kimberly Hampton lived fully, led boldly, and gave everything in service to her country. She became the first female U.S. military pilot killed by hostile fire-leaving behind a legacy far bigger than that title. She was awarded the Bronze Star, Air Medal, and Purple Heart -but those medals only tell part of the story.
The rest lives on in the respect she earned, the lives she led, and the dream she never stopped chasing.
