National AccessAbility Week is a time to reflect on creating inclusive and accessible environments for residents living in long-term care.

In LTC homes, accessibility goes beyond physical spaces. It shows up in how residents experience care day to day, how they communicate their needs, how they engage in activities, and how supported they feel in maintaining their independence and dignity.

Many residents live with visible and non-visible disabilities, and barriers can still exist in routines, communication approaches, and care practices that are not always designed with everyone in mind.

Creating accessible LTC environments means taking a person-centred approach, adapting care to individual needs, and ensuring residents are meaningfully included in decisions about their care and daily lives.

This week is a reminder that accessibility is not a one-time effort. It is something to we continue to learn, reflect on, and strengthen over time.
