We are extending Where We Sing: Documenting a Folk Revival for one more week and running a print sale fundraiser to support Ukrainian Independent Media. Photographer Carlos Gárate () is selling limited-edition framed prints from the exhibition. 70% of proceeds support the Kyiv Independent.
The Kyiv Independent has been on the ground documenting this war since the beginning: Ukraine’s leading English-language news outlet, providing critical wartime coverage and reliable, ground-level reporting to millions of readers worldwide. We are happy to host who chose to support their publication with this exhibit.
Visit us in person or head to https://www.stvolodymyr.org/art/carlos-garate to view the exhibition and purchase a print. For pricing and availability: [email protected]

This week at INSTITUT (620 Spadina Avenue)
INSTITUT 003
Vol. 3: Thursday, May 21, 2026
5:00 PM | PANEL: Nothing Bad Has Ever Happened
What does it mean to grapple with historical truth at a time of war? Marci Shore (Munk School / Yale; author of The Ukrainian Night; Guggenheim Fellow) and Karolina Koziura (cultural historian; Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow, EUI) go deep on academia, poetry, and publishing in Ukraine, with a close look at Victoria Amelina's neighbourly essay.
7:00 PM | FILM: "Well for the Thirsty" (d. Yuri Illienko, 1965)
One of the foundational works of Ukrainian Poetic Cinema, banned on release and rarely screened. Set in a nearly abandoned village, it follows an old man surrounded by memories of a disappearing world. Presented by Pylyp Illienko, son of the director and former Head of the Ukrainian State Film Agency.
11 PM | Live Score | Shaunt Raffi x The Colour of Pomegranates (Parajanov, 1969)
Parajanov's film is less narrative than waking dream: painterly tableaux drawn from the life of Armenian poet Sayat-Nova, rich with sacred music and colour. Shaunt Raffi gives it a new sonic body: a live improvised Ableton set with vintage samples.
11 PM | Shaunt Raffi | Vintage vinyl selection
Armenian folk, desert blues, ethio jazz. Threads of the evening may resurface. New ones will appear.
