India’s Muslim minority staged protests and called for the arrest of a Nupur Sharma spokeswoman of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who made controversial comments about the Prophet Muhammad.

The comments have caused diplomatic tensions between India and Arab countries with eight governments condemning her remarks. Several others have demanded an apology from the government.

Security has tightened after a letter attributed to al Qaeda’s branch in India threatened a terror attack over the comments. Sharma has been suspended from
the party.
