'Te Reo'
People were asking me Papa Tiare how come you are fluent in speaking four different Cook Island maori dialect, reo Mangaia, reo Rarotonga, reo Pukapuka e te reo Mangarongaro.

Well let me explain it in these ways.

1. Reo Mangaia
Naturally born and raise in Mangaia for 19 years and my Mangaia reo came along since birth and I will always cherished it in my heart for ever.

2. Reo Rarotonga
I came to Rarotonga since 1982 and has lived here for over 40 years.

My work as a Public Health officer do require public awareness campaign, advertising or publicity were the Rarotongan dialect is the normal conversation both spoken and written were most of our people will understand the health messages relayed or received in the Rarotongan dialect which I have the opportunity to master it and speaking it daily at work or in the community

3. Reo Pukapuka.
After graduation from Fiji Shcool of Medicine from 1986 to 1987 I was transfered to work in Pukapuka for 3 years from 1988 to 1990.

While in Pukapuka one has to learn the local Pukapukan reo which I have learnt and spoke the Pukapukan reo fluently.

The first 3 months were hard but at the end of the day it is worthwhile learning and speaking the reo Pukapuka

4. Reo Mangarongaro.
Well the Mangarongaro dialect was learn through my younger age when I met a Mangarongaro girl.

We have been living together for about 3 years from 1983 to 1986 before I left for Fiji where our relationship ended but I have learnt a lot of the Penrhyn dialect through her plus still speaking the reo at work because I have 2 fellow Penrhyn colleuges at work to keep the reo going day in and day out.

So these were the opportunities of speaking these different kind of Cook Island reo through our own instinct and personal commitment in keeping our reo alive.

'Te Tae Anga o te Evangelia i Mangaia'

'The Arrival of the Gospel on Mangaia'

Arokapiti a prominent warrior and leader of the Ngati Tane tribe predicted the arrival of the gospel on Mangaia in this manner.

While tending to his taro plant in Veitatei at a place called 'Te Paeroa ia Manu he said to his friends.
'I kakaro ake ra e tau au taeake, tera ake oa to kotou atua e aaere mai ra na te aka o te rangi a te kaokao a rauaika ua te teatea'

'Look yonder oh my dear friends, there comes through the roots of the sky your God and he is as white as the inner leaf of a banana leaf'

The gospel first arrived on the island on the 18 July, 1822 but it was not received well by the people of Mangaia.

Rev. John Williams arrived there but there were conflicts at that time with the locals and the gospel was not accepted.

On 15 June, 1824 Davida and Tiere (Tahitian) landed on the island and the prophecy foretold by the Mangaia warrior Arokapiti was full filled

The two Orometua properly proclaimed the true God on marae Akaoro and this could be initially the first site of the church on Mangaia.

The Pastors were first received on marae Orongo but the local chief Numangatini reminded that they should move to marae Akaoro as Pangemiro the Temporal Lord of the time and the people were waiting for them there.

As the years goes by the people realised then that the present site at Akaoro was not good, as it was the site for spilling blood and sacrificing humans to the gods of the heathens.

The church then moved to a new location at Akarangi in Keia district, about 300 metres from marae Akaoro close to the makatea cliff on the western side of Mangaia.

Later the curch move again and a wooden chapel, was built in 1830 at Ari-ari-o-te-rangi (door- way to heaven). That site is the location of the present hospital.

Years later the church was damaged by the cyclone and has to be relocated at the present-day church at Taukea, and named “Salema e Punanga.”

'Reo Akameitaki'

I wished to thank our Mangaian people all over the world for you comments and concern about this 'land lease' issue happening on our beloved island that we called Mangaia.

First of all, this is not a personal issue and is not targeted to any individual person but and issue that has caught us Mangaians by surprise.

If this post has offended any person please accept my apology from the bottom of my heart for that matter.

All these years we had been made to believe that the Land Court System of the Cook Islands is not regonised in the Mangaia Land Tenure System but in fact 'land leasing' on Mangaia has been through the Cook Islands High Court for so many years ago.

Lands given to the Crown, the Church and others for development has been long before taken to the Lease Tribunal of the Cook Islands for approval and for confirmation.

Uaa te 'Ture Vivi Auri' a tatou a te Mangaia.

E te Aronga Mana o te enua, kua tae ke ana te tuatau ia akatanotano ia teia i tupu ana, te tupu nei e te ka tupu mai a teia au ra i mua.

1.My own thought on leasing lands for development in the future on our island.

1. Make sure that any developer, investors, Government or person that want a piece of land on the island for any purpose, projects etc, must provide to the land owners and Aronga Mana evidence that they have enough cash on hand to lease a piece of land, so that it will not end up in court were they have to borrow money from any bank, which 'leasing land' is a criteria for any bank to approve a loan for that matter.

2. Land is to be leased out prior to an agreement by all land owners and endorsed by the Aronga Mana.

This includes the number of years the land is surrended to them. The amount of money to secure the land and the distribution of cash and other benefits equally amoung all land owners and other parties that may have an issue on the land.

All these issues shall be approved on Mangaia by all parties involved and the High Court will not be involved in the affairs of our land system as we Mangaians are claiming that the High Court of the Cook Islands is not involved.

My thoughts on this issue
