HUSRB/23R/11/086 jula 2024. do 30.

Welcome to the official page of the STOP FIRES project - StrengThening Organizations in the Protection against FIRES. This project, funded through the Interreg VI-A IPA Hungary-Serbia programme, aims to increase the resilience of the environment to climate change and risk prevention through improved disaster fire management, emergency preparedness, and raising awareness about endangered natural areas in the cross-border region, with a special emphasis on the Subotica and Kiskunság Sands area. Climate change presents a significant challenge, increasing the risk of wildfires across Europe. In light of these threats, our project will rely on cross-border cooperation, as natural disasters do not recognize borders. By utilizing and developing human and infrastructural resources on both sides of the border, we will ensure more effective emergency interventions. The project will last from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2026, with a total budget of €1,635,275.68, of which €1,389,984.32 is provided by the European Union. The Lead Partner in this project is PE „Vojvodinašume" while other partners include KEFAG Kiskunsagi Forestry and Wood Industry Plc. (HU), the Fund for European Affairs and Development of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina (RS) and the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia, Sector for Emergency Management (RS). STOP FIRES will contribute to environmental conservation and enhance the preparedness of communities to face natural disasters. The innovative aspect of the project includes the development of an integrated monitoring and early detection system for fires, as well as the creation of a cross-border emergency plan. It is expected that around 1.3 million people will benefit from fire protection measures. Follow us for more information about the activities and results of the STOP FIRES project! THERMAL IMAGING DRONES SUPPORTING FOREST FIRE PROTECTION

KEFAG Kiskunsági Erdészeti és Faipari Zrt., the Hungarian project partner, procured thermal imaging drones through the project to enhance the monitoring of forest areas and support field teams in fire prevention and firefighting operations.

During this year’s dry summer, the drones were used in several interventions involving forest and vegetation fires, enabling faster and more accurate assessment of conditions on the ground and more efficient monitoring of fire-affected areas.

They are particularly useful after fire suppression, when thermal imaging cameras help detect remaining hotspots and areas where elevated temperatures persist. In this way, field teams can identify critical points more quickly and reduce the risk of fire re-ignition.

Thanks to their ability to rapidly survey large and difficult-to-access areas, thermal imaging drones provide valuable support both during firefighting operations and in preventive monitoring during periods of high forest fire risk.

Through the procurement of this equipment under the STOP FIRES project, KEFAG Plc. has further strengthened its capacities for timely response, monitoring of fire-affected areas, and protection of forest ecosystems.

WHEN TECHNOLOGY PROTECTS FORESTS

A video surveillance and early wildfire detection system has been deployed, enabling continuous monitoring of forest areas and the automatic detection of smoke.

The importance of such a system was demonstrated during the wildfire that broke out in Kelebija Forest on Saturday, July 4.

The first report of the fire was received by phone at 11:40 a.m. A few minutes later, once the smoke became visible above the forest canopy, the StopFires system automatically issued its first alert at 11:53 a.m., followed by two additional alerts at 12:24 p.m. and 12:25 p.m.

By establishing this system, the capacities of PE “Vojvodinašume” for early fire detection and faster field response have been further strengthened — because in forest protection, every minute can make a crucial difference.
