Today marks the start of InterSupply in Dortmund, where we are exhibiting again this year.

Over the next three days, our team on site will be presenting the latest developments relating to our Genia filter material made from pure cellulose, which is produced without acetate and is biodegradable within a very short time.

Discover the biodegradable cigarette filter, which not only impresses with its pure taste, but also makes an active contribution to reducing the environmental impact of plastics in cigarette filters.

We look forward to seeing you in Dortmund at InterSupply.
You will find us in hall 3 at stand D10.

Today, on World Fish Day 🐟, we’re turning our attention to an underestimated environmental hazard: cigarette butts 🚬 in our waterways. These small remnants of cellulose acetate filters are far more than mere trash—they pose a serious threat to aquatic habitats.

Cigarette butts enter rivers, lakes, and oceans via wastewater, where they decompose very slowly. Since the filters are made of plastic, they do not rot completely but instead break down into tiny particles over the course of years. During cleanup efforts on beaches and in cities, they account for up to one-third of the collected trash—a clear indication of their prevalence.

U.S. studies show that these filters are not only dangerous to small aquatic organisms: for example, a single cigarette butt in eight liters of water is lethal to the giant water flea—an animal native to many German bodies of water. Freshwater and saltwater fish also suffer from contamination by cellulose acetate filters, even in the absence of toxic smoke substances. The filters themselves are toxic ☠️ at higher concentrations and thus harm the ecosystem.

A natural alternative is our GENIA filter material made of pure cellulose, which decomposes completely within a few weeks and contains no plastic components whatsoever. At the same time, the GENIA filter material offers comparable filtration properties and, unlike other substitutes such as paper, ensures the full flavor experience when smoking.

Summer, sun, beach and butts...

Even though it is forbidden almost worldwide to dispose of cigarette butts in nature, especially in the summer on the beach, you often come across cigarette butts that have been lying there for years.

Did you know that cigarette filters are one of the most common types of waste worldwide? Here are some alarming facts about pollution caused by cigarette filters:

1. 🚬 About 15 billion ci******es are smoked every day—and roughly two-thirds of them end up in the environment! That amounts to an annual total of 657,000 tons of plastic waste that pollutes the natural world. A large portion of this ends up in our oceans, either directly or indirectly—a massive threat to marine life.

2. 🌿 Cigarette filters are typically made of plastic fibers (cellulose acetate), which take up to 15 years to decompose.

3. 💰 In Germany alone, cities and municipalities spend approximately 225 million euros annually to clean cigarette butts from public parks, streets, and trash cans.

On the day of the oceans, we would like to focus on GENIA filter material, a solution that reduces the plastic content to zero and therefore decomposes completely within a few weeks. The airlaid GENIA filter material is made from pure cellulose without synthetic additives and is biodegradable in accordance with DIN EN 13432.

The GENIA filter material from McAirlaid's thus actively contributes to significantly reducing the environmental impact of cigarette filters and the plastic pollution of the oceans.
