The Portsmouth Town Council sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused in the vicinity of the market as repair works are currently underway on the drainage system to facilitate the installation of new drain grills.

We regret any disruption these works may cause and assure the public that every effort is being made to complete the project as swiftly as possible. These improvements are being undertaken to enhance safety and create a cleaner, more welcoming environment for our vendors, customers, and all market users.

🌱 Building a Cleaner and More Sustainable Portsmouth Through the PACT Project ♻️

Friday June 5, 2026, the Mayor, Councillors and staff of the Portsmouth Town Council met with consultants from Pack Consultancy as part of the Pathways to Circular Plastics Transformation (PACT) Project, an exciting regional initiative aimed at reducing plastic pollution and promoting a circular economy in Dominica and Saint Lucia.

During the visit, the team conducted site assessments throughout Portsmouth, identifying waste leakage hotspots and exploring suitable locations for recycling bins, collection points, and educational signage. These assessments form part of a broader consultation process to better understand local waste management challenges and opportunities.

The PACT Project seeks to address the growing issue of plastic waste by strengthening recycling systems, improving waste collection and sorting, supporting sustainable business opportunities, and reducing the amount of plastic entering our rivers, coasts, and marine environment.

Portsmouth has been identified as one of the key implementation areas in Dominica due to its coastal location and the need to address plastic waste leakage into the marine ecosystem. Through collaboration between government agencies, local authorities, private sector partners, and regional organizations, the project aims to create lasting environmental and economic benefits for our communities.

The Portsmouth Town Council is pleased to be a part of this important initiative and remains committed to supporting efforts that promote cleaner communities, healthier ecosystems, and a more sustainable future for our residents.

Together, we can transform waste into opportunity and build a cleaner, greener Portsmouth for generations to come.
