From Limassol to Alexandria, and now Ioannina, Greece! TRANSFORMED’s third Community Engagement Symposium continues to bring people, perspectives, and local experiences to the table.

Held on 24–25 September, it brought together local administrations, civil society organisations, youth representatives, and project partners to exchange best practices and explore new approaches to social inclusion.

We were honoured to have an inspiring group of speakers and practitioners join the conversation, including the Deputy Mayors of the Municipalities of Ioannina, Pogoni and Rhodes, the President of the Oraiokastro Youth Council, Municipality of Oraiokastro, Thessaloniki, the President of the House of Europe, and a Representative of Refugee Week Greece and many more.

As usual over the two days, through discussions and thematic workshops participants explored how local governance can better respond to community needs, strengthen participation, and enhance stronger collaboration between local administrations and civil society.

The ideas shared will contribute to TRANSFORMED’s next steps, building on the discussions and collaborations developed throughout the symposium series. This is not where the conversation ends! See you at the next Community Engagement Symposium!

Building stronger communities starts with bringing people together.

TRANSFORMED continued its series of Community Engagement Symposia with its second symposium, held on 30-31 July 2026 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina - مكتبة الاسكندرية in Alexandria, Egypt, and hosted by the project’s lead partner, the Anna Lindh Foundation.

We were pleased to be joined by H.E. Ambassador Nelly El Oraby, Dr. Rasha Fawzy, Dr. Rasha Fawzy, Assistant Governor of Beheira for Health Affairs, Deputy Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for European Institutions, Dr. Amira Yassin, Deputy Governor of Alexandria, and Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, whose presence highlighted the important role of local and national administrations in advancing inclusive governance.

The Symposium also gathered representatives from international organisations who are present in Egypt such as the IOM Egypt, CARE, Save the Children in Egypt, and Caritas Egypt, among other prominent organisations.

Local administrations, civil society organisations, academics, and grassroots representatives came together through panel discussions, open dialogue, and thematic workshops to share experiences, identify local challenges, and co-design solutions across four areas: women’s empowerment, active citizenship, the economic inclusion of youth with disabilities, and migrant inclusion.

Our partners from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, and Lebanon presented the governance models behind their community-serving programmes, alongside case studies from Egypt.

These exchanges build on the first symposium in Limassol and feed directly into the next steps of TRANSFORMED’s implementation, including the opportunities that will be launched for potential participants.

Building stronger communities starts with bringing people together.

The first Community Engagement Symposium of the TRANSFORMED project took place on 5–6 June 2026, in Limassol, Cyprus, organised by the project’s Cypriot partner, Cultural Movement of Limassol EPILOGI.

We were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Limassol, Yiannis Armeftis, the Mayor of Amathounta, Kyriacos Xydias, and the Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, whose presence highlighted the important role of local administrations in advancing inclusive governance.

Local administrations, civil society organisations, academics, and community representatives came together through discussions, collaboration, and hands-on workshops to share experiences, identify local challenges, and co-design solutions that strengthen inclusive governance and community engagement. These exchanges laid the groundwork for a shared framework and the next steps of TRANSFORMED’s implementation.

This symposium marks the launch of a broader community engagement process, and we look forward to continuing the conversation at the next Community Engagement Symposium.

Taking you back to our first step together!

In February, TRANSFORMED kicked off in Alexandria, Egypt. The project partners, representatives from local authorities, civil society organisations, and community members all sat at the same table, and that is where the conversation started.

Hear from the partners on this first step, and what they hope to build together: making local decisions more inclusive and closer to the people they affect, and reinforcing stronger cooperation between civil society organisations and local administrations.

And this is only the beginning! Soon, we meet again in another beautiful Mediterranean city to carry our transformative mission forward.

TRANSFORMED began with people, dialogue, and a shared direction.

1–2 February 2026 marked the official launch of the project with its Kick-off Meeting in Alexandria, Egypt. We were honoured by the presence of the Managing Authority and Joint Secretariat of the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, H.E. Polly Ioannou, Ambassador of Cyprus to Egypt and TRANSFORMED project partners and the Union for the Mediterranean as an associate partner.

Over the last two days, the partners engaged in collaborative and participatory exchanges, in-depth discussions, and joint reflections, laying the groundwork for a shared roadmap and the next steps of TRANSFORMED’s implementation across the Euro-Mediterranean.

Introducing TRANSFORMED!

Transnational Knowledge for a More Inclusive and Participatory Mediterranean (TRANSFORMED) is a governance project conceptualised by ALF and funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme. The project brings together local administrations and civil society actors across five Euro-Mediterranean countries, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Italy, and Lebanon, to strengthen cooperation and co-design inclusive, people-centered governance solutions tailored to community needs.
