Also known as the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, when this impressive centre of learning opened in 2002, it did so at a reputed cost of US $220 million dollars. Located near the site of Alexandria’s original library – once one of the finest of its kind in the world that was believed to have been burned down during the reign of Julius Ceasar, its modern replacement has a main reading room with a capacity for eight million books.
