👑 King Khafre (Pharaoh of the 4th Dynasty)
King Khafre was an ancient Egyptian monarch who reigned during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom (c. 2700–2200 BC).
* Family: He was the son of King Khufu (the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza) and succeeded his older brother, Djedefre, to the throne.
* Reign: He is believed to have ruled for approximately 24 to 26 years (around 2558–2532 BC).
* Legacy: Khafre's legacy is primarily linked to his immense architectural contributions at the Giza necropolis.
🏛️ Architectural Monuments at Giza
Khafre is one of the most famous pharaohs because of the incredible monuments he commissioned:
* The Pyramid of Khafre: This is the second-largest of the three Great Pyramids of Giza, second only to his father's. It sits on slightly higher ground, which makes it appear as tall as the Great Pyramid. It is also the only pyramid that still retains some of its original smooth casing stones near the apex.
* The Great Sphinx of Giza: Most Egyptologists believe that the Great Sphinx—the monumental statue of a mythical creature with a lion's body and a human's head—was built for King Khafre. Its head is thought to be a portrait of the king, and it sits close to Khafre's valley temple.
* Khafre's Temple Complex: His pyramid complex, including his Mortuary Temple and the well-preserved Valley Temple, set a new architectural standard that later Old Kingdom pharaohs followed.
✨ The Famous Diorite Statue
A beautiful and significant statue of Khafre was discovered in his Valley Temple. Carved from dark diorite, it shows the king seated on a throne, with the falcon god Horus perched behind his head, protecting him with outstretched wings. This statue is considered a
masterpiece of ancient Egyptian art.
