RiadArchitecture Architecture and City Planning firm

RiadArchitecture was founded in 1933 under the name and supervision of the late architect and former head of the Cairo Municipality, Mahmoud Riad (1905-1979), who was recognized as one of the pioneers of Egyptian Architecture by King Farouk, President Ga- mal Abd el Nasser, and President Anwar el Sadat. The practice were later run by his sons, Ahmed Riad (1939-2007) and Mohamed Riad (1942-); and his grandsons, former Zaha Hadid Architects employee Mahmoud M Riad (1983-) and Khaled Riad (1988-) who form the second and third generation of architects respectively.

The wall says nothing. That’s the point.

From the street, Basateen Jeddah presents a face of stone — solid, unhurried, deliberate. No hint of what waits behind it. You pass through the arch, and the city disappears.

Water. Palms. A mosque sitting at the heart of it all, not pushed to a corner but placed at the center where it belongs. Retail and F&B and residences and a hotel — all organized around the oldest idea in Arabic urbanism: that the most generous spaces are the ones you have to earn by entering.

The garden was never meant to face the street. It was meant to be found.

Basateen Jeddah.

Shadow is underrated in architecture. Most buildings fight the sun. This one uses it — the riwaq arcade casting its rhythm across the walkway, the light doing half the design work, the water beside it catching whatever’s left.

Riwaq. Jeddah. Retail, F&B, offices, a hotel — all organized around the simple idea that the space between the buildings matters as much as the buildings themselves.

Before we let go of September and welcome the month of October, we want to share the last set of images in our tribute to our second generation leader, the late Mohamed Riad, who designed this Sahel beauty -Villa Mido - in 2015; it was the last project he designed for before passing away in 2021. The interiors, designed by our very own ɪꜱʀᴀᴀ ᴋʜᴀʟᴇᴅ , blends boho chic energy with earthy beach tones.

A few days ago, we’ve shown you how it stands. Now feel how it lives.

Villa Mido - Mohamed Riad’s last gift to a site, to a sea, to the idea that a house should feel like an exhale.

In continuing celebrating the life and work of our second generation leader, Mohamed Riad , today we are sharing the last project he personally designed in the office in 2015. Villa Mido , was designed for one of his personal friends along the Egyptian North coast, and focuses on blending the interior spaces of the house with the landscape, creating pockets of space that blur the lines between what is covered, uncovered, landscape or interior … lead design by Mohamed Mahmoud Riad design team Marwa Ally, ɪꜱʀᴀᴀ ᴋʜᴀʟᴇᴅ مايا الينا 🪩🪐 † and M M M Riad - renderings by ɪꜱʀᴀᴀ ᴋʜᴀʟᴇᴅ 😎

Tomorrow we are celebrating the birthday of one of our second generation leaders - Mohamed Mahmoud Riad (1942-2021) Mohamed Mahmoud Riad - who would have turned 84. So we will be dedicating our posts over the next week to the Second Generation of … today’s post takes a look at their work in the 1970s.

This generation was lead by Mohamed Riad and his older brother, Ahmed Mahmoud Riad (1939-2007), who both joined RiadArchitecture in the 1960s working in their father Mahmoud Riad Mahmoud Riad ‘s firm. The elder Riad was appointed the technical advisor to the ministry of public works in Kuwait in 1965, and his involvement with the Kuwait projects grew larger by the 1970s. This gave the brothers the chance to work with the rest of the team in pursuing their own ideas. During this period, the office saw continuous collaborations with other international practices like RBSD Architects in New York, and the Arab Engineering Bureau led by the late Essam Fahmy; which allowed the firm to be involved in many gulf related projects during that time. The office was also doing a lot of consulting work with the Central Bank of Egypt, the Workers Union Bank, the National Bank of Egypt, the Arab League, and the Egyptian Armed Forces Insurance Fund during this time period.

Halaqat Briman — The Circles of Briman. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Where Bawabat AlMarwa receives you through a gate, Halaqat Briman draws you into a circle. The two entry courts aren’t thresholds you pass through — they are worlds you step into. Curved stone walls close gently around you, the city recedes, and the complex begins on its own terms. The circle, in Arabic culture, has always been the shape of gathering — the halqa, the assembly, the place where people come together. That is what these courts are.

And then the heart of the project opens: not a fountain, not a plaza, but a crystal lagoon surrounded by green — the most generous landscape gesture we could make in a city that is mostly stone and sun. The water and the palms aren’t decoration. They are the reason you stay.

Two hotels, two apartment buildings, townhouses, a commercial mall, and more retail than you’d expect — all held together not by axis and symmetry, but by water, green, and the logic of the circle.
