Art + History: Va començar amb l’aigua

Etimològicament, “māter” adquireix un conjunt de connotacions inesperades que, depenent de l’idioma, van des de ‘mare pàtria’ (“motherland” en anglès) fins a ‘escac i mat’, ‘matricular-se’, ‘alma mater’, ‘matar, ‘aparellament’, ‘matèria’, i, fins i tot, ‘tomàquet’.

Agustín Ortiz Herrera sent me these beautiful photos of his work “GRAVIDA” coming into shape ahead of the opening of “Māter”, next Thursday 9th May at 19:30.

We are very excited to see how the exhibition is evolving since it’s first leg in Malta, in an archive that in its past also served as a hospital and housed foundlings. We will explain more about this in a brief guided visit and the artists will be present to give insight into their work.

Agustín Ortiz Herrera me envió estas hermosas fotos de su obra "GRAVIDA" tomando forma de cara a la inauguración de "Māter", el próximo jueves 9 de mayo a las 19:30.

Estamos muy emocionados de ver cómo está evolucionando la exposición desde su primera etapa en Malta, en un archivo que en el pasado también sirvió como hospital y casa para expósitos. Explicaremos más sobre esto en una breve visita guiada, y los artistas estarán presentes para ilustrar su trabajo.

“MĀTER” está curada por Pilar Cruz, Alexia Medici y Margerita Pulè, con obras de Kristina Borg, Charlotte Nordgren Sewell, Agustín Ortiz Herrera, Irene Pérez Gil, Vanesa Varela y Raphael Vella.

La exposición cuenta con el apoyo del Arts Council Malta's Arts Support Scheme, la Autoridad de Turismo de Malta, Unfinished Artspace, el Insitut Ramon Llul, Metàfora Studio Arts y la Embajada de España en Malta, con la colaboración del Archivo Nacional de Malta y el Arxiu General de la Diputació de Barcelona.

This evening, to close the exhibition «EXTERIOR | INTERIOR» at well known artist, researcher and translator Rubén Verdú talks with Agus Giralt , historian, cultural disseminator and collaborator on the project «Va començar amb l’aigua».

One of the main points of this talk is about the role of subjectivity in historical narrative.

Rubén Verdú (Caracas, 1962) he studied Fine Arts at the Univesity of Texas at El Paso (1993) and the California Institute of The Arts (1995). He has made a great name of individual and collective exhibitions in Barcelona, El Paso, Nova York, L Lausanne, Città Sant’Angelo, Los Angeles, Monterrey, Osaka, among others. His work has a merely dialectical and relational interest, which is directly affected by the extreme ubiquity of visual production.

Agus Giralt (Barcelona, 1978), historian and popularizer closely linked to the cultural and historical fabric of Sants, has collaborated in the exhibitions of the Fundació Suñol Va començar amb l’aigua (2021) and Exterior | Interior (2022) curated by Alexia Medici driving routes through the site-specific facilities of the project.

Fields (United States, 1996), Teresa Gancedo (León, 1937), Marc Larré (Barcelona, 1978), Rebecca Lyne (England, 1974), Lizette Nin (Dominican Republic, 1984), and Rubén Verdú (Venezuela, 1962)

In collaboration with Sants-Montjuïc District Council, Fundació Suñol and Fundació Glòria Soler, La Lleialtat Santsenca and Metàfora centre d'estudis, with the participation of Casa Batllori, Flowers by Bornay, La Iguana Cultural and V***r Vell.

🎨 Interior

◽️ Interior estableix un diàleg continu amb el seu entorn, sempre canviant. Unes línies de metall tracen un espai, la forma del qual oscil·la entre la d’un vaixell en moviment i la d’un llibre obert o tancat –segons la perspectiva de l’espectador- recordant-nos que la interpretació és subjectiva i pot canviar en funció de la posició de cadascú i del moment en que s’observa la peça.

◽️ Durant la dècada de 1970, Aguilar explorava la relació entre les masses escultòriques de marbre que creava i l’espai circumdant en les seves peces. Al llarg de la dècada següent, va centrar la seva investigació en el buit de l’espai interior de les seves estructures. Ara podeu descobrir el resultat d’aquestes consideracions visitant l’escultura in situ, al recinte dels Jardins de la Maternitat, davant l’Arxiu Històric i Fotogràfic de la Diputació de Barcelona.

🎨 Sergi Aguilar. Interior

◽️ Interior continually dialogues with its changing environment. Metal lines trace a space that seems to transform between the shape of a boat in motion and that of an open or closed book, depending on the visitor’s perspective – reminding us that interpretation is subjective and can change depending on one’s perspective and the moment it is seen.

◽️ During the 1970s, Aguilar’s investigations were centred on the relationship between the marble sculptural masses he created and their surrounding space. During the 1980s his research focussed on the emptiness within the space within his structures. Experience the outcome of these contemplations by visiting the sculpture onsite, facing the Diputació Archives in the grounds of Jardins de la Maternitat.

Exterior | Interior is about adaptation and change as we relate with our external surroundings.

Presented inside the gallery space in les Corts, it is a dialogue between eight locations and their historical narratives mediated by art.

It is a diverse collection of the intangible and forgotten cultural fibres that make up the Sants and les Corts neighbourhoods.

The artworks were originally presented as an ephemeral, site-specific installation.

Today, the artists present something of the remains of those spaces. A new evolution: what was once external has become internal. An artwork, previously communicating with the environment it was inspired by, now adapts and turns to a dialogue within itself. Within, time is concealed, and the ingrained nature of art is exposed.

🎨 Hide and Seek

◽️ Ely Daou, born in Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), connects Shelter 0506, located on Rosés Street, with his childhood.

◽️ The game of hide and seek, originally from Ancient Greece, has been passed down through children over the generations. Hide and Seek relates the innocence of the game to the tragedy of war, linking the need to escape danger with the thrill of becoming invisible and escaping the gaze of others.

◽️ During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Barcelona suffered a total of 194 bombings by the fascist side. The Sants district, with a well-known associative tradition, was one of the first to build anti-aircraft shelters, most of which were excavated in a self-organized and self-financed manner by the population.

🎨 Ely Daou. Fet i amagar

◽️ Ely Daou, nascut a Beirut durant la Guerra Civil Libanesa (1975-1990), connecta el refugi 0506, situat al carrer de Rosés, amb la seva infantesa.

◽️ El joc de fet i amagar, originari de l'Antiga Grècia, s'ha transmès a través dels infants al llarg de les generacions. Hide and Seek relaciona l'innocència del joc amb la tragèdia de la guerra, enllaçant la necessitat de fugir del perill amb l'emoció de tornar-se invisible i escapar de la mirada dels altres.

◽️ Al llarg de la Guerra Civil Espanyola (1936-1939), Barcelona va patir un total de 194 bombardejos per part del bàndol feixista. El barri de Sants, amb una reconeguda tradició associativa, va ser un dels primers a construir refugis antiaeris, la majoria dels quals van ser excavats de forma autoorganitzada i autofinançada per la població.

🎨 Logan B. Fields. A Calling Bath

◽️The artist evokes the historical memory of Cal Nicasi, a spiritualist centre that disappeared more than 120 years ago, and is still present today.

◽️ The work starts form the account of a strange incident that occurred after a friend’s death.

◽️ Arising from the desire to repair the persecution of healers and spiritualists in nineteenth-century Europe, the installation aims to create a space for reflection and memory of the past.

◽️ L’artista evoca la memoria histórica de Cal Nicasi, un centre espiritista de Sants que va desaparèixer fa més de 120 anys.

◽️ L’obra parteix del relat d’un estrany incident que va ocórrer després d’una mort.

◽️ Sorgida del desig de reparar la persecució de curanderos i espiritistes a l’Europa decimonónica, la instal·lació té com a objectiu crear un espai per a la reflexió i la memòria del passat.
