A powerful evening for Africa’s economic diplomacy ✨

On 12 February in Addis Ababa, senior leaders from across government, diplomacy, finance, and development gathered to witness a bold step forward in turning AfCFTA ambition into practical trade ex*****on.

Convened by Kenya’s State Department for Foreign Affairs, in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Ethiopia/AU Office and Real Sources Africa, the High-Level Reception marked the official launch of BiasharaLink and Deal House — digital platforms designed to help diplomatic missions move from trade promotion to trade ex*****on.

With keynote interventions from Wamkele Mene, Musalia Mudavadi, the message was clear:

Africa has the policies.
Africa has the frameworks.
Now Africa is building the tools to make trade happen at scale.

Hosted at Best Western Plus Hotel Addis Ababa, the evening brought together over 100 high-level participants to explore how diplomatic missions can become transaction-enabling hubs under the AfCFTA era.

From policy to platform. From opportunity to contract. From diplomacy to delivery.

This week, we bade farewell to Lukas Kupfernagel, Country Director of the KAS Office Ethiopia/African Union, marking the conclusion of two and a half years of dedicated leadership and service at the foundation.

His leadership was characterized by intellectual depth, integrity, and a strong commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and democratic governance.

This morning, KAS Office Ethiopia/African Union convened a round-table discussion on "Five Years of the AfCFTA, bringing together Southern and East African perspectives" to reflect on how Africa’s regional integration and the implementation of the AfCFTA is unfolding in practice. We particularly zoomed into the Protocol of Digital Trade, Protocol of Women and Youth in Trade and the current existing Barriers to Trade. The session, led by Fadzai Nyamarebvu, created a space for shared learning, where participants exchanged regional best practices and practical implementation experiences from across the continent, highlighting both progress and the work still needed to unlock the AfCFTA’s full potential.

Last week in Banjul, The Gambia 🇬🇲,

KAS Office Ethiopia/African Union convened a continental meeting from December 12–19, bringing together Youth, Peace and Security advocates from across several African countries. The meeting provided a platform for experience-sharing, critical dialogue, and strategic reflection on the role of young people in advancing peace, security, and inclusive governance on the continent and the role of NAPs in doing so. Through collective discussions and peer learning, participants strengthened regional networks and reaffirmed their commitment to youth-led peace-building initiatives in Africa.

In line with our commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and democratic governance, we have prioritized a Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) to policing as a core thematic area since 2022. Through this initiative, we bring together police officers and leadership, judges, prosecutors, and representatives from police commissions, courts, and prosecution departments at both federal and regional levels.

Today, in Bishoftu, we launched this year’s high-level training workshop with the above stakeholders. The program is designed to strengthen the capacity of criminal justice actors on HRBA to policing, with a particular focus on detention, and its conceptual and legal frameworks, prevailing practices, and human rights implications.

The workshop aims to raise awareness, provide strategic insights, and foster dialogue on human rights concerns and the way forward. As the event concludes, participants will leave equipped with practical knowledge and a shared commitment to advancing rights-based policing in Ethiopia.

On October 30, young peace-builders and experts gathered at the KAS Ethiopia / African Union Office for a Youth Round-table on Ethiopia’s National Action Plan for Youth, Peace & Security (YPS).

The event brought together experiences from Cameroon, Kenya, The Gambia, and Tunisia, showcasing how youth across Africa are shaping inclusive and sustainable peace processes.

Together, we’re strengthening the YPS agenda and ensuring that youth voices continue to lead the conversation for peace and security in Africa. 🌍💬
