Project Update in Kosrae!
On May 28, Kosrae High School hosted a school-based event dedicated to local food promotion through Component 3!
High school students prepared delicious dishes featuring local staple crops including cassava, banana, breadfruit, taro, and yam—combined with other local ingredients, showcasing the importance of local food production and consumption.
A huge thank you to Kosrae High School, the Department of Education (DOE), Cooperative Research and Extension (CRE), and the Food Security Team for making this event a success and strengthening our island’s food security!

Project update in Kosrae!
The Kosrae School-Based event is running from May 25 to June 1,2026, beginning with Walung Elementary school on May 25.
Through Component 3 of the project, the Go Local Club at Malem Elementary School is actively promoting local food consumption to help strengthen our island’s food security!

Continuous Updates from GCFSAP020: Strengthening Partnerships and Advancing Food Security Efforts Across the FSM!
Project Manager Gienah Narruhn, together with Project Manager Keenen Weirlangth for the Food System Solutions (FSS) initiative, collaborated with the Rutgers University team led by James Simon, alongside Dena Seidel and intern Tori Rosen, in developing food security policy initiatives across the Federated States of Micronesia.
From April 26–May 17, 2026, the GCF Food Security Project conducted a series of collaborative meetings and consultations with stakeholders, state focal points and respective relevant government leaders across Yap, Chuuk, and Kosrae under Component 1, Activity 1.3.
The discussions focused on the development and alignment of the Food System Solutions (FSS) framework and Food Security Policies aimed at strengthening sustainable agriculture, enhancing community resilience, and promoting climate-smart approaches throughout the FSM. These efforts will also contribute to ongoing updates to the National Agriculture Policy.
During the consultations, key national priority action areas identified included:
• Strengthening and increasing local food production
• Enhancing food processing systems and supply chains
• Improving food safety, water quality, and waste management
• Providing necessary technical training for food producers and processors
• Strengthening export capacity to the outer islands
• Promoting nutrition, cultural awareness, and healthy eating campaigns
• Improving import and foreign investment policies
• Expanding access to low-interest financing opportunities

On 5/15/2026 at Nanpepper, Kolonia, Trainer Lynn Albert conducted a Food Processing and Preservation training under Component 3 of the Food Security Project from 5:00–6:00 PM.
The session helped community members build practical skills in food processing, preservation, and sustainable food practices.

Community outreach activities continued on 5/14/2026 at Nanpepper, Kolonia, where Mrs. Segal conducted a food processing and preservation training.
The training session brought together 12 mixed Zumba members who actively participated in fitness and wellness activities aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles, physical strength, and community engagement through exercise outreach efforts.

On May 13, school principals convened with the Chief of Curriculum and Instruction, the CRE Coordinator, and the Kosrae Food Security Project Coordinator to strategize on upcoming Go Local Club initiatives. The meeting focused on fostering agricultural awareness and promoting healthy, local food choices through engaging school-based activities. These collaborative efforts strengthen our partnership to empower youth and advance a food-secure future for our communities.

Community outreach efforts continued on 5/12/2026 at Poahloang, Rohi Kitti Section 3, where Mrs. Erina K. Manuel and Mrs. Mae conducted a community training session from 4:30–5:30 PM.
The session brought together community members to engage in learning activities focused on strengthening knowledge, skills, and awareness in support of community development through outreach initiatives.
