The people of Bentiu and South Sudan have lost a great man—one whose life was marked by service, leadership, and dedication to his people. Gen. Gatluak Chuol’s legacy will be remembered through the lives he touched, the strength he showed, and the values he instilled in his family and community.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Nyayiey Gatluak, the entire Gatluak family, friends, and all those grieving this profound loss. May you find comfort in the memories you shared and strength in the support of a nation that mourns with you.

Is Dok Nuer colonizing Lou Nuer and other Nuer communities? Where should we even begin, for years, we have heard the same lines on repeat: “Dok Nuer are using Lou Nuer as soldiers,” “They appoint their own sons when peace is signed,” and the classic hit song, “What did Riek Machar ever do for Lou Nuer after 1991, 2013, and 2016?” The remix version goes like : “You Lou Nuer don't be fools, this time Focus on Lou Nuer interests, not the interests of others.”

Interestingly, these statements usually appear exactly when someone wants Lou Nuer to stop supporting Dr. Riek Machar. But instead of pushing people away, the Lou Nuer people listen, laugh, then support him even more.

The same words have been thrown at Jikany, Gawar, and Fangak (Laak/Thiang) communities too, just to make sure nobody supports Riek Machar. If supporting Riek Machar means Dok Nuer is colonizing us, then what about those Nuer who support President Salva Kiir? Are they being colonized too or does colonization only applies when supporting Riek?

Nobody is colonizing anybody. these words are simply political tactics used to discourage and frighten people away from leaders they admire. The Lou Nuer, Jikany, Gawar, Laak/Thiang have their interests. Everyone knows what they want and who they want to support—no colonial visa required.
