We're thrilled to announce that our work to develop a more proactive, evidence-led approach to supporting officers and staff has been recognised with a national policing award.

The CNC won the Occupational Health category at the 2026 Oscar Kilo UK Awards, which recognise outstanding work across policing to improve the welfare and wellbeing of officers and staff.

Our submission highlighted the CNC's work to become the second police force nationally to achieve Safe Effective Quality Occupational Health Service accreditation, alongside the development of a bespoke Health Needs Assessment (HNA) programme.

Well done and thank you to everyone who contributed to this success and congratulations to all of the Oscar Kilo award winners, special mentions and nominees. It's great to see so much positive work happening across policing.

Chief Constable Simon Chesterman had the privilege of joining the graduating officers of Initial Foundation Programme (IFP) 111 at Griffin Park, our tactical training centre in Cumbria.

It was a chance to welcome our latest group of Authorised Fi****ms Officers (AFOs) along with their families and to recognise the success of the officers and our training team.

The officers may have completed their initial training but they now continue as apprentices, working towards their End Point Assessment (EPA) with their tutors at unit and our Professional Development Unit (PDU). As well as further learning and development assessments, they also will be required to pass their annual fitness assessment, meeting the standards set by the College of Policing.

The officers join from a range of professional backgrounds and bring a wealth of experience and skill to the CNC. As they progress through their careers, they may choose to take on a specialist role, such as National Fi****ms Instructor, Dog Handler, Police Medic or our Strategic Es**rt Group (SEG).

Well done and congratulations to all of the graduating officers. We wish you the best for your careers ahead 👏

Building connections with the Armed Forces community

British Forces Resettlement Services - BFRS was established in 2009 and acts as a bridge between the Armed Forces community and employers and training providers, helping service leavers, veterans and their families access support, guidance and opportunities as they transition from military service.

The CNC regularly exhibits at BFRS Careers Fairs and most recently attended the September event in Tidworth.

These events allow CNC representatives to speak face to face with members of the Armed Forces community, showcase policing kit and equipment, and answer questions based on individual circumstances.

The conversations also allow attendees to explore what life after military service could look like, including family considerations, relocation and how their skills and experience could transfer into a career with the CNC.

James Graham, General Manager at BFRS, said: “Service leavers and veterans possess experience, skills and discipline that closely align with the operational requirements of the CNC. Leadership, integrity, disciplined decision making, situational awareness, resilience, and the ability to operate effectively in high pressure and security sensitive environments are core strengths developed through military service.

“Through collaboration with the CNC, BFRS is committed to strengthening pathways from military service into armed policing and wider specialist roles that safeguard the UK’s civil nuclear sites.

“For transitioning personnel, this offers not just employment, but the opportunity to continue serving in a highly professional, disciplined and nationally critical policing role.”

We will be exhibiting at the BFRS recruitment event in Catterick on 26 November, with registration open now - https://www.bfrss.org.uk/events/1406161/

We are proud to be strengthening our engagement with the Armed Forces community through close collaboration with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP).

CTP is the Ministry of Defence's official resettlement service, supporting Armed Forces leavers as they transition into civilian employment, education or retirement.

In September, the CNC and CTP co-hosted a webinar attended by around 30 members of the Armed Forces community.

Presented by serving CNC Authorised Fi****ms Officers (AFOs) PC Chris Bottomley and PC Mark O’Neill, the session explored transferable skills, relocation and their experiences of integrating into local communities.

Attendees also heard about the Counter Terrorism Authorised Fi****ms Officer (CT-AFO) role, the CNC’s mission and Code of Ethics, the recruitment process and the range of specialist opportunities available within the Constabulary.

Joanne Lucas, CTP’s Regional Account Manager, said: “Chris and Mark were entertaining and informative, and the content was well paced and engaging, with a great balance of speech and video.

“There were attendees from several cohorts of the military community, including veterans, service leavers and families, which was excellent for a first event, and interaction during the Q&A session was good.”

Following the webinar, the CNC and CTP are exploring further opportunities to reach more members of the Armed Forces community through interactive events.

Joanne added: “These events usually gain momentum through client word of mouth and a regular programme would be welcome.”

CNC officers joined police, fire and ambulance partners for a major training exercise testing their ability to respond together to a complex emergency.

Exercise Anvil, held at Griffin Park, simulated a drink-driver colliding with a parked bus, causing multiple casualties and creating a rapidly developing situation.

The scenario tested the policing response to a serious road traffic collision from first attendance through to investigation and resolution, while giving participating organisations an opportunity to put the Joint Emergency Services Interoperability Principles (JESIP) into practice.

Organised and led by Sergeant Dave Marsden and the Professional Development Unit, the training brought together CNC officers, Cumbria Police's Nuclear Estates Team, Sellafield Ltd’s Fire & Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

Across three run-throughs, officers were required to declare and manage a major incident, establish command arrangements and use M/ETHANE messaging to share critical information with other emergency services.

They worked with partners to preserve life and manage casualties, using the Ten Second Triage approach to rapidly assess those involved. Alongside the emergency response, officers managed victims and witnesses, carried out investigative actions, arrested the suspect, preserved the scene and managed the prisoner handover.

Changing conditions during each scenario meant participants had to adapt while maintaining communication, situational awareness and operational co-ordination.

Command arrangements were also put to the test, requiring the emergency services to develop a shared understanding of the situation and co-ordinate their decision-making as events unfolded.

CNC role players helped create a realistic training environment, giving participants experience of managing multiple casualties while progressing a policing investigation at the same time.

Footage from Exercise Anvil will be made available to training departments to support future learning and demonstrate CNC’s ability to respond to wider policing incidents around the sites it protects.

Sergeant Marsden said: “Exercise Anvil gave us a valuable opportunity to train alongside police, fire and ambulance colleagues in a realistic and challenging scenario.

“Responding effectively to an incident of this complexity relies on emergency services being able to communicate, share information and work together under pressure. Training alongside our partners helps strengthen those working relationships and gives our officers the opportunity to put their skills into practice.

“I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to the day, including our partner agencies, CNC officers, Police Medics, role players and the Rapid Relief Team.”

Today is 🌎

We encourage you to take time to reflect on your own mental health and the mental health of those around you - your friends, family members and colleagues.

Send a message, have a catch up, get out and about or just remind yourself that it's okay to not be okay. Help and support is always available.

In the CNC, we are proud to foster a strong culture of mutual support to all our officers and staff.

Our Occupational Health team provide a comprehensive offer to support mental and physical wellness. Our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is a confidential and free service for employees and their families that offers guidance and counselling on a wide range of issues, including managing stress, anxiety, bereavement, medical concerns and money matters.

The EAP is complemented by the range of peer support networks available at the CNC, including qualified Mental Health First Aiders, the Diverse Ability and Wellness Network (DAWN), and Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) practitioners to support employees who have experienced traumatic events or environments on or off duty.

We work closely with our staff associations – the Civil Nuclear Police Federation for officers, and Prospect for police staff – which provide their members with further support.

And finally, as we know maintaining healthy bodies can help create a healthy mind, our officers and staff have access to free gyms, annual wellness assessments and free fitness advice from trained staff.
