At the RAFOTA Graduation on 2nd April, 29 of the graduating officers proudly began their RAF journey as University Air Squadron (UAS) cadets.

If you’ve never heard of the opportunities available, UAS offers a unique chance to sample RAF life while at university. Alongside ground and flying training the UAS blend recruitment preparation, leadership and development training, Defence education, public engagement and sporting activities within a single organisation; attracting adventurous individuals interested in Air and Space Power. These elements are central to the UAS experience, offering exceptional opportunities for personal growth and development that go far beyond what is typically available at university alone.

Off Cdt Mehra – MASUAS

“The UAS gave me first-hand exposure of life in the RAF, showcasing how different mechanisms aid its functioning. 6FTS provided high-quality training packages, with FP courses aiding MSM and squadron duties helping me in CLM. The flying training was second to none, which I hope will benefit me in EFT. I would recommend the UAS to anyone interested in joining the military or gaining exposure to the RAF.”

Off Cdt Paterson – Universities of Wales Air Squadron

“I simply would not be in the Royal Air Force if it were not for the Universities of Wales Air Squadron. Through concrete mentorship and unwavering encouragement, I have been able to earn an honoured place in the RAF. The squadron didn’t just show me the path; they gave me the tools to walk it.”

Off Cdt Neale – East Midlands UAS

“The University Air Squadron system was fundamentally vital to me standing on this parade square. Whether it was the assistance and guidance throughout the application, or the exposure to military life in preparation for MIOT, 6FTS provides the optimal foot in the door for life as a commissioned officer in the RAF.”

Recently, students attended the squadron’s annual Ex Indy Lion, a fantastic adventurous training exercise in Wales.

The week was filled with a variety of outdoor activities, designed to be enjoyable while challenging students both physically and mentally.

Activities included sailing, mountaineering, climbing, and mountain biking, allowing students to learn new skills and develop existing ones.

The trip also enabled newly attested members to integrate well into the squadron with some great socials every night.

Overall, it was a fantastic week of adventurous training, and we look forward to next year’s event.

Students recently had the opportunity to visit RAF Brize Norton, the UK’s largest military airbase and the hub of the Royal Air Force’s air mobility operations.

They began their visit with a tour of 101 Squadron, which is responsible for the RAF’s air-to-air refuelling and strategic transport capabilities. Students learned more about the squadron’s missions and were fortunate enough to look around a Voyager aircraft which is used for both air-to-air refuelling and long-range transport.

Students then visited 99 Squadron, home to the C-17 Globemaster III, which is used for long-range, heavy-lift transport missions. They were briefed on the squadron’s roles and capabilities and finished with a tour of the aircraft.

The day concluded with a visit to a simulator used to train A400M loadmasters.

Overall, it was a very insightful visit to RAF Brize Norton, allowing students to experience key aspects of one of the RAF’s most important operational bases.
