FREE WATER BOTTLE REFILLS IN TOWN CENTRE
A new way of reducing plastics by using a sticker in shop windows has been set up by Alton Town Council to encourage people to refill their water bottles for free instead of buying a plastic one, while helping people stay hydrated.
Councillor Barbara Tansey, Town Mayor, said: “By displaying these ‘Free water bottle refill’ signs, our local cafés, shops and restaurants are making it easier for people to choose refill over single-use plastic. It’s a simple idea that can make a real difference – helping residents and visitors to stay hydrated whilst reducing waste and supporting our town’s commitment to tackling climate change. We are grateful to the businesses taking part and helping towards a cleaner, more sustainable town centre.”
The idea came from the council’s Climate Change Committee when the water fountain in the Public Gardens was repaired. They realised there was no suitable location for another drinking fountain in the Market Square, so they asked local businesses to help by offering to fill water bottles for free. The stickers will show people where they can refill their water bottles.
The sticker was designed by local Eggar's Schoolstudent, George, who was at the Town Council for work experience. He said: “It was an amazing experience turning my creativity into something useful for the environment.”
Funded by the Council’s Climate Change Committee, businesses that have already decided to put up the stickers are The Market Hotel, Goldfinch, Caffe Nero, Coffee Cherry, Millie’s, Mike Frost Carpets and Wellbeing Pharmacy.
Any other shops that are interested should contact Wendy at Alton Town Council, [email protected].
