Unwanted fire alarms are an issue for everyone. They can divert fire crews away from genuine emergencies, disrupt businesses through unnecessary evacuations, and reduce confidence in alarm systems - potentially leading to slower responses when a real fire occurs.

They also introduce avoidable risk. Emergency responses often involve blue-light driving on public roads, and in areas served by on-call firefighters, individuals may have to leave their workplace only to find the alarm was not caused by a fire.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service Group Commander for Protection, Mark Garrett, said:
“A significant number of these activations can be prevented through simple measures such as regular maintenance, appropriate staff training, and a better understanding of what can trigger detectors.”

There are practical steps you can take to reduce unwanted fire alarm activations. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has a legal duty to ensure appropriate fire safety measures are in place and maintained, including the fire alarm system. This includes regular maintenance, keeping systems in good working order, and ensuring staff are aware of common causes of false alarms.

Taking these steps can help minimise disruption, maintain confidence in alarm systems, and ensure fire and rescue services remain available to respond to genuine emergencies.
