Do You Recognise Yourself as a Carer?

Many people support a family member or friend every day without thinking of themselves as a carer.

You may be an unpaid carer if you help with:

💙 Attending appointments
💙 Managing medications
💙 Shopping or household tasks
💙 Emotional support
💙 Day-to-day wellbeing

Recognising yourself as a carer is often the first step to accessing support, advice and services that can help.

You don't have to do it alone.

💡 Did You Know?

The Herbert Protocol is a national scheme designed to help police find vulnerable people, including those living with dementia, more quickly if they are reported missing.

The scheme encourages carers, family members and friends to record useful information about a person living with dementia in advance. If they go missing, this information can be shared with emergency services to help support a safe return.

Completing a form only takes a short amount of time but could make a significant difference in an emergency.

🎃 Halloween can be fun for many people, but for some people living with dementia, changes to routine, unexpected visitors, decorations and increased noise can sometimes feel confusing or unsettling.

A few simple ideas may help:

🍂 Keep familiar routines where possible
🍂 Consider limiting decorations that may cause confusion
🍂 Reduce unexpected door answering if it may cause distress
🍂 Create a calm and comfortable environment indoors
🍂 Focus on autumn activities that feel familiar and enjoyable

Some families find a polite "No Trick or Treating" sign helpful if they would prefer a quieter evening.

Examples:

🎃 No Trick or Treating Sticker
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BJ2BRLL8

🎃 No Trick or Treating Hanging Sign
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BHKGM2KL

These are examples only. Similar signs are available from many retailers.

Every person experiences dementia differently, so the most important thing is finding an approach that works for them.

💜 Living well with dementia is about helping people feel comfortable, supported and included.

Regular movement can help with:

🚶‍♀️ Supporting mobility and balance
💪 Maintaining strength and independence

A walk, gentle exercises, chair-based movement, dancing to favourite music or gardening can all be positive steps.
