This morning, I had the honour, as Mayor of Barnsley, of officially launching this yearās Poppy Appeal in our town centre.
Standing alongside the Churchfield Branch of the Royal British Legion and our local Army, Sea and Air Cadets was a moment of real pride, but also a time to reflect on why we wear our poppies.
We remember the service personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Behind every name on a memorial is a person who was loved, a family whose lives were changed forever, and a future they never had the chance to live.
As Mayor, and as someone proud to call Barnsley home, it means a great deal to help honour their memory. Our town has strong military ties, and we have a responsibility to ensure their service and sacrifice are never forgotten. Seeing our young cadets taking part gives me hope that remembrance will continue through the generations.
Iād like to give a heartfelt thank you to every volunteer supporting the Poppy Appeal, including those who braved the cold with us this morning. Giving your time to collect, organise and support the appeal makes a real difference, and I canāt thank you enough.
If you see the volunteers in our town centre or your local area over the coming weeks, please stop, have a chat and support the appeal if you can.
We remember those who never came home, those who served alongside them, and the families who carry their memory every day.
We will remember them.
