🤝 Record Number of Wirral Residents Accessing Support to Recover and Rebuild Their Lives

More than 3,600 residents in Wirral are now getting support for drug and alcohol problems – the highest number ever recorded locally.

A new report, due to be presented to the Adult Social Care and Public Health Committee on 9 June 2026, shows real progress in helping people stay safe, recover and rebuild their lives.

The latest figures show:
➡️ 3,663 people currently in treatment
➡️ 955 people completed treatment successfully last year
➡️ 445 people moved into work, education or volunteering
➡️ 86% stayed in treatment for at least 12 weeks, above the national average of 82%

There is also encouraging progress in reducing harm. Drug-related deaths are declining, and more than 1,500 naloxone kits have been given out to help prevent overdoses and save lives.

This work is commissioned and led by Wirral Council and delivered with a wide range of partners through the Wirral Drugs Strategy, a long-term plan that brings together health services, the council, police and community organisations to reduce harm, support recovery and make communities safer.

Strong partnership working is making a difference in other areas too. Around 70-80% of people leaving prison are now engaging with treatment within three weeks, significantly higher than the national average of 56%.

While there is a lot to be proud of, the update is clear that there is more to do.

The report sets out plans to reach more people who are not yet in treatment and to strengthen support for newer drug trends, such as ketamine. It also confirms that work will continue to prevent harm and save lives, including providing life-saving naloxone.

This Saturday (6th June) we will have a drop in craft activity for families at Birkenhead Central Library as part of the Great Big Green Week.

Join us 2-3pm where you can make a fabric flower, design a bookmark and plant your very own micro flower meadow in a pot🌻, whilst just using recyclable or recycled materials.

No need to book and on a first come first served basis until resources are used up ♻️

Also the wonderful Wirral Repair Cafe will on site 2-4pm- see below
"Come to Birkenhead Library to learn how to repair and recycle right during the Great Big Green Week!
Nicola will be showing visitors how to deal with stains and rips to clothing. Karen, an expert upholsterer, will be sharing her skills. Madeleine will teach how to darn holes in knitted clothes.
Rachel from Veolia's Gillmoss Recycling Discovery Centre will be there too to remind us what can be put in our grey recycling bins, now the rules have changed to include more items.
As usual, our repair team will be ready to fix a wide range of broken or non-functioning household goods, and hot drinks and homemade cake will be available in the café area - all free of charge"

🗑️Fly-Tipping Ruining Our Streets Again, this is Watson Street & Cathcart Street Birkenhead.

📝Out in Birkenhead today and once again fly-tipping is a real problem for residents and we have reported the issues.

👀 On Watson Street piles of domestic waste have been dumped and reported to the council — Reference 842654143.

👀 On Cathcart Street, gas cylinders and beer cans were left — Reference 842655112.

💚 Everyone here is proud of where we live.

🤝We need to take ownership and responsibility.

❌It’s not okay to use our streets as a bin.
This brings the whole area down.

🪧Birkenhead PSPO Update

The consultation on Wirral Council proposed PSPO has now closed.

The order follows 1,428 reported anti-social behaviour incidents in the last year and would give additional powers to tackle issues such as street drinking, nuisance groups and dangerous use of bikes, e-bikes and scooters.

We agree anti-social behaviour needs tackling.

But enforcement alone isn’t enough.
We also need to address the causes through:

• Support for young people & community groups
• Improved mental health services
• Action on poverty and housing

What do you think?

Has anti-social behaviour affected you in BSJ?

👇 Comments welcome.
