In the time of William the Conqueror it was called Phincingfelda. It has been described as "the most photographed village in England".
Finchingfield is regarded as a 'picture-postcard' village with a duck pond and village green surrounded by Georgian and medieval cottages; a church and public houses etc. Views of the well known green, pond, cottages and church are often to be found on calendars, tea towels and postcards.
