Child safety Reminder

As we head into the darker autumn and winter evenings, the Safer Neighbourhood Team would like to remind children, parents and carers about staying safe when riding bikes and scooters around our towns and villages.

We have once again received reports of several incidents involving young people riding bikes and scooters into the path of moving vehicles in Alveley. Officers have spoken to Alveley Primary school children this week and once again reinforced important road safety messages. Some of the teenagers may also need re-educating around this too.

Please remember:

🚴 Always wear a helmet when riding a bike or scooter.

🦺 Wear bright or high-visibility clothing, particularly during darker mornings and evenings.

πŸ’‘ Ensure bicycles have working front and rear lights and reflectors when riding in low-light conditions.

πŸ›΄ Electric scooters are illegal to use on public roads, pavements and highways unless part of an authorised rental scheme. Privately owned e-scooters may only be used on private land with the landowner's permission.

We would also like to remind residents that bikes and dogs are not permitted on Alveley Recreation Ground. Signage is displayed around the field, and we ask everyone to respect these rules, so the area remains safe and enjoyable for all users.

We want our community to feel reassured that road safety concerns are being addressed and that we are working with young people to educate them about making safe choices. Keeping children safe is everyone's responsibility, and simple precautions can help prevent serious injury.

While schools and the police regularly reinforce safety messages, parents and carers also play a vital role. Please take a few moments to speak with your children about road safety, safe riding behaviour, helmet use, visibility and where they are permitted to ride.

Together, we can help keep our children safe.

If you have concerns about anti-social behaviour or road safety issues in your area, please contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team through www.neighbourhoodmatters.co.uk.

πŸ• Dog poo bins - where do we need them?

Okay, we get the joke - is dog poo really all Parish Councils talk about? The Vicar of Dibley springs to mind but there is a more serious issue behind this post.

We’ve received a number of complaints from residents recently about dog poo not being picked up and, perhaps even worse, filled poo bags being dropped into people’s hedges and gardens.

We’ve also been asked again whether we need more dog poo bins around the parish. We have installed some new bins but did you know that properly bagged dog waste can also be put into the normal public waste bins around the village? So you don’t necessarily need to find a dedicated dog waste bin.

There was an issue some time ago with some bin collections falling behind but this has now been resolved.

We are still very happy to consider whether additional bins are needed. They do come with an ongoing annual cost for Shropshire Council to empty them, so we want to make sure any new bins are put where they will genuinely be used and make a difference.

So, over to you…
🐾 Do we need more dog poo bins or general waste bins in the parish?
πŸ“ If so, where do you think they are most needed?

Pop your suggestions in the comments below. πŸ‘‡ Or you can email the clerk on [email protected]

πŸͺ‘ In other news… where’s the bench gone?

You may have noticed that the bench at the top of the village is currently AWOL! Don’t worry – it hasn’t disappeared for good. It was in need of a bit of TLC and has temporarily been removed for refurbishment.

The ironwork will be shot blasted and powder coated, with the wooden slats replaced, before the bench returns to its usual spot looking considerably smarter.

This part of the project is now in the capable hands of Will Scriven and should be completed within the next few weeks.

Along with the new bus shelter, this really has been a project involving local people and local skills – just as it should be. 😊

🚌 A new bus shelter for the top of the village

You may have spotted a new addition at the top of the village – our new bus shelter is now in place!

A shelter at this location has been discussed for some time and, understandably, there were different views about the best way forward. The Parish Council brought the proposal back for consideration this year and, following further discussion and research into the options available, agreed to go ahead.

We’re really pleased to now see it in place, providing some welcome shelter from the Shropshire weather for people waiting for the bus! β˜”πŸšŒ

Keeping Our Public Rights of Way Open and Accessible

Alveley and Romsley are fortunate to have an extensive network of public footpaths, bridleways and rights of way that provide residents and visitors with opportunities to enjoy the countryside, access local amenities and support healthy outdoor recreation.

The Parish Council has recently received reports of some routes being affected by overgrown vegetation and other obstructions. As we move through the growing season, we would like to remind landowners and occupiers of their responsibilities for maintaining public rights of way that cross or adjoin their land.

These responsibilities include:
β€’ Keeping public rights of way free from obstructions.
β€’ Cutting back vegetation encroaching onto paths from the sides or above.
β€’ Maintaining authorised gates and stiles in a safe and usable condition.
β€’ Keeping field-edge paths clear and accessible.
β€’ Reinstating and clearly marking cross-field paths where cultivation has taken place.
β€’ Ensuring crops do not obstruct the line of a public path.

Well-maintained paths benefit everyone in our community, including walkers, horse riders, families with pushchairs, people with mobility difficulties and visitors enjoying our beautiful local countryside.

The Parish Council would like to thank those landowners and residents who already devote considerable time and effort to maintaining access across the parish. Their contribution is greatly appreciated and helps preserve an important local asset for current and future generations.

If you encounter a problem on a public right of way, please report it directly to Shropshire Council's Rights of Way Team via the Council's website.

By working together, we can help ensure that Alveley and Romsley's rights of way remain safe, welcoming and accessible to all.
