Pine martens are officially back in South Devon!

National Trust rangers have worked hand-in-hand with Devon Wildlife Trust, local landowners and partners to restore and connect woodlands across South Devon.

This vital conservation work has helped boost woodland ecosystems, creating the right conditions for the rare native pine marten to return.

Once hunted to near extinction, pine martens play an important role in healthy woodland ecosystems, helping maintain a natural balance of plants and wildlife due to their varied diet including small mammals, berries and insects.

Shy, elusive and mostly active at night, pine martens are rarely seen, so we were thrilled when our trail cameras captured this individual.

It appears to have travelled more than 25 miles from a Dartmoor release site as part of the Two Moors Pine Marten Project and has now settled into its new South Devon woodland home.

Keep up to date with the project via the link in our bio.

Did you enjoy the extra hour in bed this morning?

Clock's going back an hour means it's officially the end of British Summer Time, and a return to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Sunrises and sunsets start a little earlier than we've been used to for a while, but it does mean we're rewarded with peaceful morning moments like this at Coleton Fishacre.

It was an ambitious challenge to crochet over 400 squares for a 7ft Christmas tree in just 8 weeks. We know what you're thinking, will the team at Greenway do it?

Time is ticking, and with just 28 days until Christmas launches, they need as much help as possible. With thanks to visitors, volunteers, staff and local groups, they're now halfway to their target, with crocheted and knitted squares being dropped off, posted from afar and even crafted onsite.

There's still time to help Greenway's Big Christmas Stitch Up, if you'd like to get involved.

Join others for a social knit and natter (or crochet and catch-up) at Greenway, with refreshments provided. There'll be an instructor on hand and extra materials, if you'd like to learn how to crochet.

🧶 Monday 9 November, 10.30am-1pm

Exciting café business opportunity at Wembury.

Old Mill Café at Wembury has been lovingly managed by our current tenants, but the time has come for ventures new. Once part of a historic mill, the café sits right by Wembury beach and offers a warm welcome to the local community, walkers and beach users, and so we're looking for new tenants.

Available to rent from December 2026, there is a viewing day on Friday 6 November. More details are available on Rightmove > https://bit.ly/OldMillCafeWembury

Greenway recently welcomed three international writers to stay within Agatha Christie's former holiday, for the Greenway Residency in partnership with Exeter Unesco City of Literature.

International writers and illustrators Aining Wen (Nanjing City of Literature, China), Judith Rossell (Melbourne, Australia) and Manjiri Prabhu (Kozhikode, India)

Greenway Residency provided space and support for the three writers to develop their practice at Greenway, a place that inspired Agatha and continues to inspire today. It celebrates Devon’s rich literary legacy, and the county’s unique access to a worldwide network of writers, readers, and storytellers thanks to Exeter’s UNESCO Cities of Literature designation.

It was wonderful to host Aining, Judith and Manjiri and be part of the residency. To discover more about Greenway's literary legacy, visit > https://bit.ly/InspiringGreenway

Not to be dramatic, but we think Prawle Point might have stolen our hearts.

History hides within this rugged landscape, as the South West Coast Path sweeps along the most southerly point of Devon, revealing ancient boundary stones known as orthostats. Protected scheduled monuments they are hundreds, if not thousands, of years old.

Among them grow navelwort, stonecrop, sea spleenwort and a wildflower called autumn squill, which despite its name, flowers in the summer months. But in the colder seasons, this breath taking landscape makes for a rewarding coastal walk.

Once a month, a brilliant team of Shoresearch volunteers head onto the rocky shore at South Milton Sands to explore the hidden world of the intertidal zone. Together they peer into rockpools, learn how to identify marine species, and record the wildlife they find. It’s a chance to discover more about the coast on their doorstep while contributing to important scientific research.

Since launching the South Milton Sands surveys in 2025, the small but mighty team of volunteers has already identified more than 100 different species. We asked them to share their favourite finds, revealing just how rich and surprising the rocky shore can be.

For Alison, it was seeing lightbulb sea squirts on her first survey, and Louise became enchanted with brittlestars starfish. While Eleanor is captivated by nudibranchs, Amy loves spotting hermit crabs and their individual shells.

Next month, the team will be heading over to Man Sands, near Coleton Fishacre, to test a potential new Shoresearch site. If you’d like to join the growing team and help uncover more of the coast’s hidden life, send us a message.
