Caersws Community Council Caersws Community Council meet each month to discuss matters which affect the local community across it's three wards.

The small Powys ward of Caersws is a village and community in Mid Wales. Adjacent to the River Severn at its confluence with Afon Carno, Caersws is located four miles west of Newtown, Powys and halfway between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury (grid reference SO032918). The Caersws ward includes the local villages of Llanwnog, Pontdolgoch and Clatter. The name Caersws means 'Fort of Sws', 'Caer' meaning fort, and 'Swsan' (sometimes 'Swswen') being an ancient Roman queen. The village is the location of two Roman forts of Roman Wales. Caersws Community Council consists of twelve volunteer members from all parts of the Ward. The members meetings are held monthly on a Wednesday evening where local issues from highway maintenance to celebratory events are discussed; discussions also include planning applications and issues relating to planning.

Whether you're out walking, driving through the village or simply notice something that needs attention, you can help keep Caersws and our surrounding communities safe, tidy and well maintained by reporting it directly to PCC.

We're fortunate to have a wonderful network of public footpaths, bridleways and countryside walks around Caersws and our neighbouring communities.

However, paths can become overgrown, gates and stiles damaged, signs go missing, and occasionally routes become obstructed.

PCC has a dedicated "Report a concern with a right of way" service, allowing walkers to report issues they encounter.

You can access it through the main reporting page or use the dedicated Public Rights of Way mapping portal:

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ ๐—ฃ๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ช๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น:
https://prow.powys.gov.uk/standardmap.aspx

The portal allows you to identify public rights of way on an interactive map and report problems with specific routes.

You can make a report as a guest, but if you're a regular walker, it may be worth registering for an account on the mapping portal to make it easier to use the service regularly.

By reporting problems, walkers can play an important role in helping keep our countryside paths accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

If you come across an issue that presents an immediate danger to the public, particularly on a road or pavement, please do not rely on the online reporting form.

Instead, contact Powys County Council directly so the issue can be brought to their attention urgently.

Examples include a fallen tree blocking a road, a dangerous obstruction, a collapsed road surface or another hazard requiring urgent attention.

For an urgent safety concern involving a public right of way, such as a collapsing footbridge, PCC also provides the number 01597 827500.

If there is an immediate threat to life, call 999.

With such a large rural county to maintain, reporting problems helps PCC identify issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

By reporting an issue directly, you help ensure it reaches the appropriate team for assessment and any necessary action.

Caersws Community Council also welcomes residents raising local concerns with us, particularly where issues affect the wider community. However, for matters managed by PCC, using the online reporting service is a useful first step.

If you spot something that needs attention around Caersws, Clatter, Llanwnog or our surrounding communities, please consider taking a few minutes to report it.

Together, we can all play a part in looking after the places where we live.

Closing all but 60 of our GP led community hospital beds in Powys, which has no general hospital or hospice, is not the way to provide care. Rural healthcare needs a radical rethink, not cuts. ๐ŸšŒ Main Street Bus Shelter โ€“ Update for Residents

Caersws Community Council has received several concerns from residents regarding the recent replacement of the bus shelter on Main Street, near Plas Maldwyn.

We have contacted Powys County Council (PCC) for clarification and can now share the following update.

๐Ÿ”น Why was the old shelter removed?

PCC has confirmed that the previous bus shelter was suffering from rust and deterioration, making it potentially unsafe for residents.

The original shelter had been a familiar feature of Main Street for many years. We've even found a Google Street View image dating back to 2009, showing the old shelter in place some 17 years ago!

๐Ÿ”น Further improvements are planned

PCC has advised that the replacement shelter will receive further upgrades:

Solid rear panels will be installed in the near future to provide better protection from the weather.

A green roof is planned in approximately 12 months' time to help support biodiversity and encourage wildlife.

Bus timetable information will be updated during the week commencing 12 October 2026.

๐Ÿ”น Community posters and notices โ€“ there's a better place! ๐Ÿ“Œ

We know that residents, local organisations and community groups often use the bus shelter to advertise events and share information.

However, PCC has reminded us that posters and notices should not be attached to its property without permission, as they can create hazards and damage the shelter.

The good news is that there's a community noticeboard directly opposite the Red Lion, and it's unlocked and available for residents to use!

We would encourage anyone wishing to advertise local events, activities or community information to use this noticeboard instead.

It's a great way to share what's happening in our community while helping to keep the bus shelter safe, tidy and welcoming for passengers.

๐Ÿ”น Thank you for your feedback

We appreciate residents raising their concerns and hope this update provides some reassurance that further improvements are on the way.

Caersws Community Council will continue to liaise with PCC and share any further updates as they become available.

๐ŸŒฟ Cenotaph Bench Update โ€“ and Weโ€™d Like Your Ideas ๐ŸŒฟ

Following the replacement of the two old wooden benches near the Cenotaph, we received a number of comments from residents who were understandably fond of the original seating.

Unfortunately, the old benches had reached the point where they were no longer safe to remain in use, so they were removed and placed into storage.

Weโ€™re really pleased to say that local joiners Glyn Brown and Viv Bradley have since worked their magic and brought a new wooden bench to life, using the character and traditional style of the original seating as inspiration.

The new bench has now been installed near the Cenotaph, complete with the original โ€œIn Loving Memoryโ€ plaques.

A huge thank you to Glyn and Viv for the time, skill and care they have put into this, and also to Billy Wainwright for his help with transporting the benches.

Itโ€™s great to see a traditional wooden bench back in place in such an important part of the village.

This does leave us with one of the new brightly coloured recycled-plastic benches looking for a new home!

Rather than simply choosing a location ourselves, we thought weโ€™d ask residents:

๐Ÿ“ Where in the village do you think the remaining coloured bench would be most useful?

Perhaps somewhere along a popular walking route, near one of our community spaces, or somewhere that currently has nowhere to sit?

Pop your suggestions in the comments below or email [email protected] and weโ€™ll take a look at the ideas put forward.

And once again, our thanks to Glyn Brown, Viv Bradley and Billy Wainwright for helping us find a solution that respects the character of the Cenotaph area while keeping the seating safe and usable for everyone.
