As Food Cardiff looks forward to the development of a new strategy for the city’s growing good food movement, it is also evaluating successes so far and the initiatives and ideas that have made a high-level impact.
One example was the 'Food for our Future' report published last year by the Future Generations Commissioner with support from Food Sense Wales. Taking a view across Wales of what’s working to improve local food systems and deliver against the well-being goals, the Commissioner outlined tried-and-tested policy levers that local authorities and public bodies could use.

Wrth i raglen Bwyd Caerdydd edrych ymlaen at ddatblygu strategaeth newydd ar gyfer mudiad bwyd da cynyddol y ddinas, mae hefyd yn gwerthuso llwyddiannau hyd yma a’r mentrau a’r syniadau sydd wedi cael effaith lefel uchel.

The Planet Card was a pilot scheme giving low-income households weekly credit to buy organic fruit and veg directly from local farmers at Roath and Riverside Cardiff Farmers Markets.
Between 2023 and 2025, the pilot reached 120 households, generated an estimated 1,744 market visits, and saw £19,000 of vouchers spent directly with our local farmers producing climate and nature-friendly food.
But the impact went beyond food budgets.
Planet Card members described the markets as welcoming, social and empowering spaces - places to learn, connect, speak directly with growers and shop with dignity.
A new report from Food Cardiff and Food Sense Wales / Synnwyr Bwyd Cymru shares what the Planet Card pilot can teach Wales about fairer access to good food.

The Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival is just around the corner, and Food Cardiff will be kicking things off with the Good Food Zone at the St Fagans Food Festival (12-13 September).

Mae Bwyd Caerdydd yn cynnal digwyddiad i rannu mewnwelediadau newydd o’r peilot Cerdyn Planed, ac i gyd-ddylunio cam nesaf y rhaglen.

On Monday 11th May, Food Cardiff is hosting an event to share new insights from our ‘Planet Card’ pilot, and to collaboratively shape the next phase of the programme.
The Planet Card was a collaboration between Cardiff Farmers Markets, Food Cardiff, and a group of organic growers, social enterprises and community organisations.
It gave eligible card holders a value of up to £11 per week to switch their normal fruit and vegetables to organically produced versions, without being left out of pocket.
This event will focus on key findings from two evaluation reports: Cardiff University’s Planet Card evaluation report and Sustain: The Alliance For Better Food And Farming’s Bridging the Gap report ‘How to fix the food system for everyone’ - alongside reflections from delivery and practice. We’ll explore how the Planet Card has added value beyond just access to good, local food on wider social and environmental impacts.
