We're really excited to be supporting the “Sudanese Community of East Cardiff” with funding towards the development of their activities. We caught up with them recently to ask a few questions....
🌟Who are SCEC and how are you involved in the community?🌟
The Sudanese Community of East Cardiff (SCEC) is a community charity supporting the growing Sudanese population across East Cardiff, particularly in Rumney, St Mellons, Llanrumney and surrounding areas.
Helping families, children, young people and individuals to build connections, reduce isolation and support wellbeing. We provide opportunities for people to stay connected to their Sudanese heritage and culture, while maintaining traditions of generosity, hospitality and community.
🌟How can people get involved with you?🌟
SCEC is volunteer-based, built on the cooperation and contribution of its members. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and play a part in supporting the community.
SCEC holds events and activities, volunteers contributing their time, skills and experience, as well as helping with whatever is needed. This may include helping with organising venues, preparing food, setting up activities, supporting children and families, welcoming guests, fundraising, or simply giving their time to help.
Local organisations, schools, charities and community groups are also welcome to work in partnership with us. We want to be inclusive and welcoming to the community.
🌟What difference does our funding make to you?🌟
The T4TSM Grant has made a huge impact on us, it was the foundation that helped start us up and organise ourselves to establish SCEC.
As a volunteer led based organisation, where most people are giving up their free time to run events, the grant has enabled us to to cover essential costs and provided activities for children, women, families and the wider community.
Most importantly the grant has helped us turn an idea into a real community. It has strengthened our sense of belonging, encouraged more people to participate and given us a strong foundation from which we can continue to grow and become more sustainable in the future.
🌟What are your hopes for the future?🌟
Our hope is to continue growing in volunteers, building a strong community and staying sustainable. We want to build on what we already have in East Cardiff and develop regular activities promoting wellbeing and social inclusion.
To provide more educational opportunities for families and children that can help community members with education, further education or jobs opportunities.
In the longer term we would like the Sudanese Community to become a well established and sustainable community working in partnership with Cardiff Council, local organisations. Not only to preserve and celebrate our culture but share it with others, build friendships and relationships between communities and bring a positive contribution to diverse communities in Cardiff.
