1 November 1756: Wanlockhead Miners’ Library was founded. It was the second subscription library for working people to be founded anywhere in the world, and it was modelled after the first such library that was founded in the neighbouring Leadhills in 1741. The Society for Purchasing Books in Wanlockhead, as it was originally known, was created by 32 miners. It was intended to offer educational and self-improvement opportunities, as an alternative to the wild behaviour of the miners' limited free time. The library amassed a collection of nearly 3,717 books by 1925, with about 2,572 remaining today. The collection, which includes books published as early as 1616, covers subjects such as religion, biography, fiction, and history. The library moved home as its collection grew, eventually occupying the Grade A-listed building it does today, which opened in 1851. After falling into neglect in the mid-1950s, the Wanlockhead Museum Trust took over responsibility for the library and its collection in 1974. The collection was designated a Recognised Collection of National Significance in 2008.

Hi Andy Burnham. Pop in when you're in town tomorrow. We've got the kettle on.

Cllr Bell said: “When I wrote to Andy Burnham to congratulate him on becoming Prime Minister, I also asked him to meet me and colleagues to discuss how Home Office decision-making is fuelling a homelessness crisis among refugees.

“I was hopeful that he, as a former city leader – and one who had already recognised the challenges facing urban authorities – would be ready to listen.

“But I’m starting to lose count of the number of times he’s come to Glasgow and left without so much as a word on a crisis that he may not be the architect of, but which he does have an urgent responsibility to solve.

“Tomorrow, he’s in Glasgow to chair an economic council to which English city leaders get an invite, but will shut out the city he’s actually in.

“Unlike that closed shop, my door will be open all day. The kettle is on, Andy – pop in.”

🎒 Your SNP Scottish Government will provide children starting school next year with a Welcome to School Bag, containing a pencil case, pencils, crayons, a notebook, a water bottle, and resources to encourage literacy and numeracy practice at home.

💛 The initiative is designed to help ensure every child has the same positive start to primary school.

🙏 Available in 5 colours, the bags will also include information and guidance for families of P1 pupils, including details of social security support and advice for parents and carers on keeping children safe online.

🏫 They will be delivered in time for children to receive them during their transition visits, when new pupils visit their primary schools ahead of the summer holidays to meet their classmates and become familiar with their new environment.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Building on the success of the universal Baby Box programme, this initiative aims to ensure that every child starts school on an equal footing and with a strong sense of belonging from day one.
