Just days after removing her colourful autumn harvest postbox topper on the High Street, local knitter Nicola Ross has replaced it with a more sombre one to mark Remembrance week in Chislehurst.
Nicola, who lives just off Elmstead Lane and went to school at Edgebury and Coopers, is a member of the library’s Knit & Knot group and regularly decorates our postboxes with her woven works of art.
If you join this weekend’s Remembrance Sunday Parade, which leaves the Queen’s Head pub at 10.30am, you will pass right by the postbox outside Hornbrook House car park en route to the War Memorial. The High Street and local roads will be closed temporarily for the morning service and two-minute silence at 11am.

Cray Wanderers' remarkable FA Cup journey has captured the imagination of football supporters across the country, with tickets for the club's historic First Round Proper match against Stockport County selling out in less than five minutes.

For a club founded in 1860 and recognised as the second oldest football club and the oldest in London, the occasion represents one of the most significant moments in its 166-year history.
The Wands will welcome League One leaders Stockport County to Flamingo Park on Sunday 8 November, with kick-off at 2.15pm, in a fixture that has attracted attention far beyond the local football community. The match has been selected for live television coverage and will be broadcast nationally on BBC Two, as well as BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and TNT Sports 3.
The overwhelming demand for tickets underlines the excitement surrounding the occasion, with every available ticket snapped up within minutes of going on sale.
Having entered the competition at the First Qualifying Round, Cray Wanderers have overcome Lewes, Maidstone United, Chippenham Town and Bedford Town to reach the First Round Proper for the first time in the club's history. Their reward is a sold-out home fixture against one of the highest-ranked teams remaining in the competition.
For generations of supporters who have followed the club through decades of non-league football, the match is more than simply a cup fixture. It is a celebration of a football club whose story stretches back over a century and a half and whose place in football history remains unique.
The occasion is also a landmark moment for Flamingo Park, which will host one of the highest-profile matches in the club's history. With television cameras in attendance and football fans across the country watching, the fixture will shine a spotlight on both the club and the local community.
The magic of the FA Cup has always been its ability to create moments that transcend league positions and budgets. Cray Wanderers' journey from the Isthmian League to a nationally televised match against Football League opposition is a powerful reminder of why the competition continues to capture the imagination of supporters at every level of the game.
While Stockport County will arrive as favourites, the Wands have already shown resilience, determination and belief throughout their cup run. The result has been a surge of interest from supporters old and new, culminating in a sold-out crowd and a national television audience.
For players, volunteers, supporters and everyone connected with the club, the match represents the latest chapter in a story that began in 1860. One hundred and sixty-six years on, one of football's oldest clubs now stands on the national stage, preparing for a fixture that many supporters have waited a lifetime to see.

The Chislehurst Society has completed its annual moment of pride and reflection as we honour the fallen from all wars.
Our volunteers have been out around the village putting up poppies as part of Remembrance. This year we managed to extend the lampost coverage all along Centre Common Rd towards the memorial. We have also given some poppies to the traders association on Royal Parade.
It is our honour to do this for Chislehurst
We will remember them.

Monthly round up!
October 2026

The months of the year continue steadily on. October saw us celebrating or blaming former local resident William Willett for the extra hour ( though dogs and babies were not aware). At least the clock above Langford Russell now tells the correct time after six months of no change!
We’re already looking ahead and Christmas planning is on full swing along with work alongside the local National Trust towards their centenary year in 2027.
We’ve been part of project groups to restore the lettering on the war memorial and helping Farringtons School with an update on their history.
We were fascinated to see the plans for a restored and revitalised cricket pavillion unveiled by WKCCC.
Our usual coffee mornings, planning panels and monthly litter picking have carried on and our board has met to look at financial strategy.
We’ve been able to support work experience and Duke of Edinburgh placements for our member families and we were joined by a volunteer from Barclays to help us with the 550 spooky visitors who arrived at the Old Chapel for Halloween!
It’s a good job we are ready to launch our new publication of spooky history stories next month🎃👻!

Prickend Pond certainly welcomed the weekend rain with many of the ducks and geese flying across from nearby Rush Pond.
Following one of the driest spells and an almost complete absence of wildfowl for weeks, flocks of mallards, Canada and Egyptian geese all returned for a splashing time. Seagulls are also flying in from the coast for hopefully a warmer winter in Chislehurst and, of course, the pigeons love to drop by when there’s food about!
