****** Training Night ******

This week, we welcomed 2 of our latest new recruits to our monthly training session. We conducted an exercise, simulating a tasking to an incident in Kimmeridge bay. This was an opportunity for the team to practice a whole range of the skills used whenever we deploy to a tasking.

The team where tasked to Kimmeridge Bay to initialy carry out a search to locate their casualty (our practice dummy). Once they found the casualty on the beach, they had to carry out an initial casualty assessment, deliver immediate first aid and carry out ongoing observations. The team on the ground had to maintain communication with the exercise OIC, as well as Solent coastguard (simulated by one of the team). The team requested the stretcher was sent down, along with additional manpower so that the casualty could be extracted back to the car park.

This exercise was a great opportunity for the team to use a range of skills, such as search, casualty care, problem solving and communication all of which where put to the test in the dark.

Training session like this are key to ensuring our team is ready to respond to incidents, whenever a tasking comes in.

Storm Austen is set to bring disruptive wind and rain ⚠️

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across parts of southern England and Wales for Friday 23 October.

Gusts could reach 50-60mph, and coastal and exposed areas could see 70mph or more.

Stay safe at the coast:

• Stay away from cliff edges as sudden gusts can cause you to lose balance

• Avoid standing directly beneath cliffs as rocks and debris can fall

• Keep back from the shoreline and look out for large breaking waves

Visit the HM Coastguard website for more advice on staying safe at the coast.

If you see someone in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Never drive through flood water 🚗

Just 30cm (1ft) of moving water can be enough to float a car.

If a road is flooded, don’t risk it. Turn around and find another route. The water could be deeper and faster flowing than you realise.

If you get stuck in flood water by the coast or see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

🚨 A busy day for the team yesterday, with three shouts in total.

At 11:42am, the team was paged to reports of a casualty at Durdle Door who had fallen down the steps onto the bank below.

With Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team also tasked, both teams made their way down to the casualty to assess and provide assistance alongside South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

The casualty’s injuries were serious and as their condition began to deteriorate, it was decided that a helicopter extraction was required. Kimmeridge Oscar made the request for Rescue 375 from Lee-on-Solent.

With the helicopter now being organised, St Albans Head Coastguard were requested to assist with establishing a helicopter landing site at the top of Durdle Door and clearing the beach below.

All three teams and Lulworth and Durdle Door Rangers worked quickly to clear a very busy beach in preparation for the arrival of the rescue helicopter. We would like to thank members of the public for their cooperation and patience while we carried out the operation.

🚁 With Rescue 375 safely landed on the beach, the casualty was carefully transported to the helicopter before being flown to the top of the car park, where they were transferred to a land ambulance for onward transport to hospital.

A big thank you to everyone involved in the response.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery. ❤️‍🩹

📍 Durdle Door

Kimmeridge CRT were tasked for the second time of the day this time alongside Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team and Wyke Coastguard CRT to a casualty having difficulty breathing.

On arrival the team quickly located the casualty and started casualty care to assess the situation. It was determined that the casualty needed extraction from the beach and further medical care so with the coastguard helicopter 375 already requested the teams cleared the beach for landing and set up a landing zone up in the car park. She was then transported up to the car park where she was handed over to an ambulance for further treatment.

With the heat looking to continue over the next few please follow the NHS guidelines

• Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly, even if not thirsty.

• Avoid peak heat: Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

• Wear appropriate clothing: Light, loose-fitting clothes, hats, and sunglasses.

• Use sunscreen: Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to prevent sunburn, especially if on photosensitizing medications.

• Monitor for symptoms: Dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, confusion, or excessive sweating may indicate heat-related distress. Seek medical help immediately if severe

If you see anyone in difficulty in the sea or along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately.

Yesterday, two members of our team, alongside an off-duty firefighter from Wareham Fire Station, came across a young boy on a riverbank who was in urgent need of first aid.

Acting swiftly and calmly, they worked together to provide immediate care and reassurance until further help arrived. Once patched up the casualty was then taken to hospital by the parent for additional treatment.

In what was undoubtedly a distressing situation, their professionalism, teamwork and quick thinking helped ensure the young boy received the care he needed when it mattered most.

This incident is a reminder that the commitment to helping others doesn’t end when a shift finishes. Whether on duty or off duty, emergency service personnel are always ready to step forward when someone needs assistance.

We wish the young boy a full and speedy recovery. 💙

📍 South West Coast Path above Man O’ War

The team was tasked alongside Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team to assist South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust following reports of a casualty who had become unconscious on the South West Coast Path.

With the recent hot weather and challenging terrain along our coastline, incidents like this can quickly become serious and require a multi-agency response.

Upon arrival, team members were pleased to find the casualty had recovered sufficiently and was walking up the hill with ambulance crews. As the casualty no longer required a stretcher evacuation from the remote location, both Coastguard teams were stood down and returned to station.

A positive outcome for all involved, and we wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.

☀️ If you’re enjoying the coast during the warm weather, please remember to carry plenty of water, wear appropriate footwear, and take regular breaks in the shade.

🚨 In an emergency at the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
