The promised increase in money for public services doesn’t scratch the surface after 14 years of Tory austerity. Too much of that money will end up in the hands of privateers and financiers.

There are no price controls on essentials or caps on bills, rents or mortgages. Working people will continue to suffer.

Britain is a fantastically wealthy country. Rather than taxing the rich and big business to pay for these measures, Labour have protected the money hoarded by the fat cats and the City of London.

Working people have to immediately step up the fight for wages and properly funded public services.

We have to take back what the rich have stolen.

Join us for our Autumn Morning Star
Conference focused on women's liberation at Unity Books in the Southside of Glasgow. Unfortunately, circumstances outwith our control has meant we are unable to host the conference at the STUC. We will return there in 2026.

Coinciding with the UN led 16 days of activism against gender based violence, which begins on 25 November, this conference is open to all Morning Star supporters, irrespective of gender.

We are seeing is escalating violence against women and girls both in the UK and worldwide. 85,000 women and girls were killed at the hands of men in 2023; and one in three women worldwide were victims of male violence. In the UK, rising violence against women and girls has been described by a police chief as a “national emergency”.

The conference will have three sessions as follows:

Session 1: Fighting the rise of prostitution with Nordic Model Now

Session 2: Women's Rights and the Equality Act. Where do we stand in 2025?

Session 3: The Far Right and Violence against Women and Girls

Lunch will be provided to those attending in-person at Unity Books.

A zoom link will be circulated the day before the conference for those attending online.

One year since John Swinney pledged the eradication of child poverty as his government's "single greatest priority" we're looking at over 15,000 children without a home and rising.

Homelessness in Scotland is shameful. As the figures suggest there are ample existing properties for the homeless in this country, just not the political will to interface with simple arithmetic.

The Scottish Government’s Housing Bill won’t fix this systemic crisis - it’s full of half measures and loop holes.

We need real change - starting with an immediate rent reduction and freezing and proper protection from eviction.

We need to commence with an immediate programme of mass council house building and renovation. This would address the housing crisis and create thousands of quality jobs and apprenticeships in one swoop.

Members of the Scottish Parliament have deplorably voted 70-56 in favour of the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill.

Like the similar Westminster bill, it has been championed as progressive, as giving choice to people in extreme circumstances.

But this legislation must be considered in its material and economic context. That context is one of the Scottish Government failing to protect the most vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic, presiding over worsening NHS provision, constantly cutting community resources, reducing palliative care, and creating increasing isolation for elderly and disabled people.

Many people will feel like a burden. They will be coerced into choosing state sanctioned death.

We are told that death is a compassionate choice, while they simultaneously fail to make life worth living.

We desperately need better health and social care. We need better social security, so that disabled and elderly people are not forced to choose ‘warm house’ or ‘warm food’.

The bill’s supporters talk about choice, but the real option is living with dignity.

Communists will continue to fight to make all our lives worth living!
