From 1 October 2026, the average price cap unit rates and stand charges for domestic energy are changing again. You may have seen it in the news, but none of it applies to your business energy bill.

Commercial energy rates aren’t capped. What you pay is whatever the market was doing on the day you signed, and the price is locked in for the term of your fix-rate contract.

The good news is that being outside the cap works both ways. You aren't protected by it, but you also aren't waiting on it. If your contract ends in the next six months, now is the time to act.

Which costs your business more in energy costs, a penny on the unit rate or fifty pence on the standing charge?

It depends on how much energy you actually use, which is why you can pick the quote with the lowest price per unit and still end up paying more than if you'd taken a rival one.

The unit rate is only half the pricing. It charges by every kilowatt-hour you use. The standing charge doesn't, it charges daily regardless of usage.

So for a business getting through a lot of electricity like a factory, a small difference in unit rate increases the bill. For a lower-usage site, say an office, the standing charge is often the bigger number.

Which is why the figure worth comparing is the estimated annual cost. If a quote doesn't show it, ask for it. It's the only number that tells you what you'll actually pay.

There is a point in a business energy contract where the opportunity to secure a better deal is at its widest. Most people miss it.

If you're the person in a 30-50 employee business handling the energy contract alongside the lease, insurance, cleaning contract and printer ink refills, it's easy to put contract end dates to one side until a renewal letter lands.

What many people don’t realise: Most suppliers will allow you to agree new rates up to 6 months before your current contract ends. Once you agree, the rates are locked in and the new rates won’t start until the old contract ends.

That turns a job you have to do with a ticking deadline and a higher-than-you’d-like renewal notice in your hands into a task you can check off your list long before anyone starts asking you to firm up next year’s budget.

That’s enough time to compare a range of quotes and make sure they’re based on what your business actually uses, rather than having to weigh up options in isolation with time running out. Or even worse, missing the renewal deadline and finding yourself on out of contract rates.

So this is your prompt:
1. Dig out your latest energy bill
2. Find the contract end date
3. Check the notice period you need to give your current supplier (it’s usually between 30-120 days)
4. Set a reminder on your calendar
