There are some phone calls that remind you exactly why our industry matters.

Recently, a business owner found our number on Google and called us in a panic.

A Fire Risk Assessor from West Midlands Fire Service had arrived at their premises following fire safety concerns. During the visit, the owner was asked to provide evidence that key fire safety measures were in place.

The problem was they couldn’t.

There were no maintenance records to hand. No clear evidence that the fire alarm had been serviced. No confidence that the system protecting the building was actually doing its job.

To make matters even more urgent, there was someone living in the flat directly above the shop.

This wasn’t just about paperwork anymore.

It was about protecting lives.

We rearranged our day and attended as quickly as we could. Our priority wasn’t selling anything. It was helping the customer demonstrate that they were taking immediate action to make the premises safer.

We carried out the necessary checks, identified what was working, highlighted what wasn’t, and put together a clear plan to restore compliance as quickly as possible.

One thing I always tell business owners is this.

The Fire and Rescue Service isn’t looking to catch people out. They want to see that you’re taking your responsibilities seriously. If there are issues, showing that you’re acting promptly and working with competent contractors can make a significant difference.

Unfortunately, too many businesses only discover the gaps in their fire safety arrangements when someone from the Fire Service is standing in reception asking questions.

By then, you’re reacting instead of planning.

Can you produce your fire alarm service records today?

Are your emergency lighting tests up to date?

Are your fire extinguishers maintained?

Would you be confident if a Fire Risk Assessor knocked on your door this afternoon?
