📍 We’ve all seen it. But where does this rubbish come from?

These are real examples of fly-tipping in & around Meltham (bridleway up by the Wills O Nats)

Behind every pile is a cost to our community - from the resources needed to clear it to the impact on the places we all live and work.

One way to help stop it is to make sure your own rubbish is going to a legitimate waste carrier.

Before you pay someone to take your rubbish away:

✅ Ask for a waste carrier licence
✅ Check the number on the Environment Agency register
✅ Check you’ll get a receipt

If you’re moving house, renovating or need waste gone quickly, don’t let a tempting price rush you into making the wrong choice.

Our research found that just 9% of people who had previously used a private waste collector checked the Environment Agency’s official register - and 38% worried that rubbish they’d paid someone to remove may have been dumped irresponsibly.

The good news? There are three simple checks you can make.

Before you hand your rubbish over to someone you’ve found online:

✅ Ask for a waste carrier licence
✅ Check the number on the Environment Agency register
✅ Check you’ll get a receipt

It takes minutes and could stop your rubbish ending up fly-tipped in your local community.

🏞️🌿 THROWBACK THURSDAY – Meltham Pleasure Grounds: A Little Piece of History! 🌳💚

Did you know that Meltham Pleasure Grounds were created back in 1858, to give the workers of Meltham Mills a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the outdoors? 🌲

Charles Brook commissioned renowned landscape gardener Mr Major of Leeds to design the grounds, with winding paths, rocky ravines, bridges, running water and carefully chosen trees and shrubs. The Pleasure Grounds were ready to enjoy by August 1859! 🌿

In 1944, the grounds were gifted to the people of Meltham by the United Thread Mills Ltd — and today, they remain a much-loved local space for everyone to enjoy.

📸 This week, we’re sharing some old photographs and a look back at the history of this special place. How much do you recognise?

❤️ Help us look after our local green spaces!

The Friends of Meltham Pleasure Grounds volunteers do a fantastic job caring for the area, from weeding and planting flowers to litter-picking and keeping it looking welcoming for everyone. A huge thank you to all those who give up their time to help! 👏🌼

🏮 Coming up this weekend: Light Up the Pleasure Grounds!

Local people have been busy making their own lanterns, ready to light up the grounds for this wonderful annual community event. ✨🏮

⚠️ A little weather warning! The forecast isn't looking too promising, so the event may need to be postponed. Please follow the Friends of Meltham Pleasure Grounds page and keep checking for the latest updates before heading down.

💔 PLEASE HELP US PROTECT JOE’S MEMORIAL 💔

The Town Council are saddened to report that further vandalism has taken place at Joe’s memorial skateboard bench and nameplate at Broadlands Skate Park.

This bench is so much more than a place to sit. ❤️ It is a lasting tribute to Joe and a special place of remembrance for his family, friends and the local skateboarding community. To see it damaged again is deeply upsetting for everyone who knew and loved him.

🛑 PARENTS & GUARDIANS – PLEASE TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN.

We’re asking all parents and guardians to have a conversation with their children about the importance of respecting community facilities, other people’s property and, especially, memorials that hold such deep meaning for others.

Broadlands Skate Park is a fantastic space for young people to meet, have fun and develop their skills. The vast majority of users treat it with respect, and we want to keep it that way. But vandalism affects the whole community and causes real hurt to those who have already lost someone special.

🙏 Please help us make a difference:
💬 Talk to your children about respecting the park and Joe’s memorial.
👀 If you see vandalism or have any information about the damage, please contact Meltham Town Council.
🤝 Help us spread the word and encourage everyone to take pride in our shared spaces.

This is our community, and we all have a part to play in protecting it. Let’s work together to ensure Broadlands Skate Park remains a welcoming, safe and respectful place for everyone.

💷 Fly-tipping isn’t just an eyesore, it’s a waste of money for everyone.

Councils spend up to £150 million every year clearing illegally dumped rubbish.

That’s money that could otherwise help fund vital public services such as 🏫 schools, 🌳 parks, 🏥 hospitals and 🫶 social care.

Keep Britain Tidy’s latest research found councils estimate rogue traders and commercial operators are responsible for more than a third of fly-tipping incidents.
So if you’re offered a cheap deal, check who you’re paying to take your rubbish away.

Protect yourself. Protect your community. Protect your local environment.

👀 What is the ad not telling you?
A cheap price and promise of a quick collection won’t tell you where your rubbish will end up.

Rogue waste traders can look like legitimate businesses online, but they’ll take your money and then dump your rubbish illegally in streets, parks and lay-bys.

That’s why it pays to check before you book.

✅ Ask for a waste carrier licence
✅ Check the number on the Environment Agency register
✅ Check you’ll get a receipt

If someone won’t give you the information, don’t hand over your rubbish.

📺🎬 Throwback Thursday – Meltham: A Star of the Small Screen! 🌟

Lights, camera, action… Meltham has been on TV! 🎥

Over the years, our village has welcomed film crews and familiar faces as local streets, buildings and homes have appeared in some much-loved television programmes. How many do you remember? 👀

🎭 The Six Sides of Coogan (1995)

In April 1995, comedian Steve Coogan came to Meltham to film The Six Sides of Coogan, part of his BBC comedy series Coogan’s Run. St Bartholomew’s Church, the Parish Hall, Green End Road, Town Hall and local pubs around the Market Place all featured in the filming. The show was set in the 1960s and filmed in black and white to capture the period feel!

❤️ Where the Heart Is (1998 onwards)

ITV’s heart-warming drama Where the Heart Is, set in the fictional Yorkshire town of Skelthwaite, also brought the cameras to Meltham. The series followed the lives of district nurses, their families and the wider community — with local homes and streets helping bring its Yorkshire setting to life.

🍷 Last of the Summer W**e

And, of course, our part of West Yorkshire has long been familiar to fans of the classic BBC comedy Last of the Summer W**e. Although best known for its filming around Holmfirth, the production also used locations in the surrounding valleys, including Meltham and nearby villages.

📸 This week, we’re sharing photographs from these productions and looking back at the times our village became a filming location!

Do you remember seeing the film crews in Meltham? Did you spot any familiar streets, buildings or faces on screen? We’d love to hear your memories! 👇❤️

🚩 “Cheap prices.” “Cash deals.” ‘Same-day collection.”

When you need rubbish gone quickly, a cheap, quick deal can be hard to resist. But rogue traders can use convincing online ads and tempting offers to seem just like legitimate businesses.

So, before paying someone to take your rubbish away, ask for their licence number, check it on the Environment Agency register and make sure they’ll give you a receipt.
Remember: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

A few simple checks can protect you and your community from fly-tipping.

Fly Tipping Fortnight 2026!

Meltham Town Council is teaming up with Keep Britain Tidy for ‘Fight Fly-Tipping Fortnight’, a campaign warning residents about criminal waste traders who use convincing, professional-looking online ads to pose as legitimate businesses - only to illegally dump the rubbish they are paid to take away.

🚨 Would you be able to spot a rubbish deal?
Rogue waste traders don’t always look like criminals. A professional-looking ad, ‘five-star’ reviews, a tempting price and quick collection can all make a trader look legitimate.

But what happens to your rubbish once it leaves your hands? That good ‘deal’ could end up with your waste being fly-tipped in a local street, park, field or even a graveyard.

This Fight Fly-tipping Fortnight, we’re helping residents spot the warning signs of a waste scam and showing you how to protect yourself, your community and your local environment.

Whenever you’re hiring someone to collect your rubbish:
✅ Ask for a waste carrier licence
✅ Check the number on the Environment Agency register
✅ Check you’ll get a receipt

Don’t just trust the ad. Check the trader.
Don’t fall for a
