🏫 Starting School: Skills to Practise Together
Getting ready for school is a big step for your child! Every child develops at their own pace, but practising simple daily skills together can help them feel more confident and independent.
💬 Communicating Wants and Needs
Being able to tell an adult when they need help, feel unwell, are thirsty, or need the toilet is essential for your child’s wellbeing at school.
💡 Tips to try at home:
• Help your child practise expressing their needs in the way that works best for them
• This might be speaking, signing, pointing to pictures, or using a communication device
• Support them to recognise and share how they’re feeling – “Are you thirsty? Tired? Worried?”
• Use everyday moments to practise, keeping it natural and pressure-free
🌟 Remember: Every child communicates differently. Whether they are verbal or non-verbal, and whether they use signs, symbols, pictures or devices – whatever works for your child is perfect.
📣 Let your child’s school know what works best so they can support them from day one.

📢 Parents, carers, children and young people, education settings and wider professionals are encouraged to complete a short survey to help shape Knowsley’s Local SEND Reform Plan.
✅ It's part of the Government's proposals for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) reforms in England, setting out a national ambition to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND and to create a more inclusive, consistent and sustainable system.
📄 As part of the preparations for the reforms, the Knowsley SEND Partnership is developing its Local SEND Reform Plan. This plan will set out how the council and its partners strengthen SEND support across education, health and care over the coming years.
💬 Please share your views which will inform the development of the Knowsley SEND Reform Plan by completing a short survey here - https://orlo.uk/c4Obn
