On Friday, 25 October, Liberia’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Gurly Gibson Schwarz met with the Director General and staff of the Liberia National Standards Authority. The staff outlined challenges within the nation’s quality infrastructure. Key issues discussed included the urgent need for equipment, reagents, and training to conduct conformity assessments and sample testing, as well as the challenge in retaining skilled personnel.

During her tour, Ambassador Schwarz was informed of several priority areas including the need for a General Microbiology Lab, essential for compliance with both national and international food safety regulations, accreditation etc to compete in global markets. Another on the priority list of the institution is a Cement Testing Lab and a Mineral Oil Hydrocarbon Lab which are needed to ensure the safety and quality of construction materials and food packaging. These facilities are essential for qualifying products for export and safeguarding both food and non-food items within Liberia.

Ambassador Schwarz spoke of Liberia’s eligibility for programs like AGOA or African Growth and Opportunity Act and the UK Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), which can significantly benefit the country if Liberia had the capacity to export large quantity of products. The Ambassador promised to do her part to engage with partners and stakeholders to enhance the authority’s operations and recalled the initial support from the US Government through USAID during the tenure of Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield. While grateful for past assistance, she acknowledged that more work remains to be done to strengthen Liberia’s quality facility which is urgently needed to increase the exportation of Liberian products.
