Black History Month: Many people will have heard of John Archer, Battersea’s first black mayor, but fewer will have heard of Jane Rose Roberts (née Waring), the widow of the first President of Liberia, who lived with John Archer and his wife Bertha at their home in Brynmaer Road from around 1906 until her death, aged 95, in 1914.

Born in Virginia in 1818, Jane emigrated with her parents and siblings to Liberia in 1824. She married John Joseph Roberts, a businessman active in politics, in 1836. He was President of Liberia from 1848-1856 and again 1872-1876.

Jane accompanied him on state visits to Europe. Following his death in 1876, Jane Roberts settled in England. In July 1900, she attended the first Pan-African Conference, held at Westminster Town Hall, where John Archer was also a delegate. By 1906 she was living with the Archers, reportedly still ‘in possession of her full faculties’. She is buried in Streatham Cemetery on Garratt Lane.

Introducing our candidate to become the next Mayor of London: Cllr Luisa Porritt!

A serving Camden councillor, elected as an MEP in last year's European elections, Luisa has the energy, ideas and determination London needs at a crucial moment in its history.

Luisa says: “I love London - it’s where I grew up and it has given me so much. But huge challenges, such as the affordability crisis and the impact of Covid-19, mean this is a crucial moment for London.

“The pandemic will change our city forever. We need big ideas and urgent action to rise to the challenge.

“I will show what a liberal London can be like - where the 600 neighbourhoods that make up our capital lead the way.

“From putting homes in the heart of the city to reinventing our high streets for the future, we can renew every area in London to become thriving, green, and affordable places to live and work.

“As a lifelong Londoner, I know our capital is resilient. With the right leadership, creativity and vision, we can reinvent our city for the better. If we bring London together, anything is possible.”

Congratulations on your selection, Luisa - and we look forward to hitting the campaign trail with you!
