Europe Month in Scotland: Investing in the next generation of EU-UK ties

As part of Europe Month celebrations taking place across the UK, Deputy EU Ambassador to UK Isabell Poppelbaum visited Scotland to engage with government representatives, business leaders, students, and EU citizens’ organisations.

Opening a Europe Day conference in Edinburgh, she highlighted the vital contribution of EU citizens across Scotland and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to protecting citizens’ rights.

At the University of Edinburgh, discussions focused on the future of EU-UK relations, the return of Erasmus+ opportunities, and the importance of youth mobility and exchanges.

From dialogue with the Scottish Government and business representatives to conversations with students and civil society, the visit showed how strong people-to-people connections continue to shape the future of the EU-UK partnership.

Happy Europe Day! 🇪🇺
On 9 May 1950, Robert Schuman had a vision: to build a Union where peace, integration and democratic cooperation go hand in hand.
Ever since, we have celebrated this day to remind ourselves of the long way our Union has come and the values that unite us.

Over four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. What was meant to weaken Europe strengthened our unity.

Ukraine stands firm. Europe stands with Ukraine.

Russia’s aggression was a strategic miscalculation and our support to Ukraine remains steadfast.

The path to peace is clear: intensifying pressure on Russia while increasing support for Ukraine.

🏃‍♂️🇪🇺 Team Europe Run in Hyde Park!

To celebrate Europe Day, colleagues from the EU Delegation and EU Member States ran together in London — because Europe is built on connection, teamwork and shared experiences 💙

And did you know? Erasmus+ is not only about student exchanges. From 2027, the UK’s return to Erasmus+ will also create new opportunities in sport — supporting grassroots organisations, coaches, volunteering and cross-border cooperation.

Happy ! 🇪🇺

Ambassador Pedro Serrano has been looking forward to answering your questions, and he even brought two special guests to join him: Nick-Thomas Symonds and Stephen Doughty. Let’s just say their reading choices seem very much aligned, and not only… 📚

So, how are you celebrating Europe today? 💡💙

Team Europe on the move!

🏃🏃‍♀️To celebrate Europe Day, colleagues from the EU Delegation and EU Member States came together in Hyde Park today as Team Europe.🇪🇺

Because Europe is not just about policies — it’s about people and shared experiences.

💡Did you know? With the UK set to rejoin Erasmus+ from 2027, even more opportunities are opening up for young people — in education, training and sport. Erasmus+ sport actions promote physical activity, social inclusion, and volunteering by funding projects that foster cross-border cooperation among grassroots sports organizations.

Key opportunities include staff mobility e.g. coaching or job shadowing, capacity building and much more.

At our Europe Day reception, guests were welcomed with a flash mob performance of Ode to Joy by the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra. 🇪🇺

Today, we celebrate not just an anthem, but the vision born 76 years ago with the Schuman Declaration.

“Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity.”
— Robert Schuman

“What is Europe to you?”

Marking Europe Day we opened a thought-provoking photo exhibition at Europe House by artist and curator Lisa Borgiani.

As part of , the exhibition brings together voices from citizens across Europe. It explores faces, stories, and emotions that highlight both our diversity and shared humanity.

The exhibition is open throughout May at the 12 Star Gallery of Europe House.
