Significant development in the 🇮🇪Irish Lariam (Mefloquine) cases.
After years of denial and legal battles, the Irish Government has now agreed to settle all outstanding cases brought by serving and former Defence Forces personnel over the use of the neurotoxic antimalarial drug Lariam.
According to the Dáil Éireann Written Answers (4 Nov 2025), the State Claims Agency confirmed:
• 39 cases remain pending, with engagement ongoing to reach a conclusion acceptable to all parties.
• The total amount paid to date for Lariam-related claims is €9,988,570.
Independent confirmation has also come from legal representatives handling dozens of these cases, who report that settlements have now been reached.
For many, this marks the end of a very long and painful journey, one that has taken years of persistence, evidence gathering, and public pressure to reach recognition and closure.
While no settlement can undo the harm caused, it does at least represent acknowledgment, some accountability, and validation for those who served honourably and were left to carry the consequences 🧠🪖
