A ongoing stone replacement project in St Leonard’s, carrying out extensive replacement of sandstone and Bath stone.

Replacement of deteriorated window jambs, mullions, transoms and headers, carefully cut and fitted to match the existing historic stonework.

Traditional materials, skilled craftsmanship and sympathetic restoration to preserve the character of the building.

🔷Project complete, Tovil Burial Ground.

A recent restoration project focused on carefully repairing and conserving the historic stone boundary wall and iron railings.

The existing railings were carefully removed to allow full access to the masonry beneath. The ragstone copings were dismantled, with a number of heavily weathered or defective stones replaced before being carefully reinstated.

A section of the leaning wall was carefully dismantled and rebuilt, retaining and reusing the original stonework wherever possible to maintain the character and appearance of the historic boundary.

One of the stone pillars had also become significantly leaning and unstable, so it was carefully dismantled and rebuilt, retaining the original stonework.

The wall then underwent localised repointing and masonry repairs, addressing areas of weathered and open joints while retaining the character of the existing historic stonework.

Once the masonry repairs were complete, the restored railings were refitted, reinstating the original appearance and character of the boundary.

A combination of sympathetic stone replacement, careful dismantling and rebuilding, traditional masonry techniques and sensitive restoration has brought the wall and railings back into sound condition while preserving the historic character of the frontage.

🔷Ongoing restoration works at our major project in St Leonard’s.

Our team has carefully removed a number of defective sandstone and Bath stone quoins, mullions, headers, and transoms. Installation of the replacement stonework is now well underway, with significant progress made and further sections still to be completed.

🔷The team have recently been carrying out restoration work to this burial ground wall in Tovil, on behalf of the council.

Our schedule of work involved;
1. Dismantling the leaning pier and bulge in the wall
2. Removal of the cast iron railings (these are off site and currently being restored before they are refitted)
3. Removal of 9 sections of damaged ragstone copings and replacing these with new sections
4. Various rebuilds to missing sections of the wall
5. Remedial repointing
6. Pending… once the railings are restored they are being re fitted

Along with the new stonework, we also removed the previous inner brickwork and supplied and fitted new matching stocks and pointed In flush lime mortar.

The previous mortar had become an attraction for masonry bees and was no longer protecting the surround bricks. This was carefully removed and replaced with new lime mortar
