Pride month is underway! ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ

The Haringey community came together this morning to raise the Progress Pride flag at George Meehan House.

Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Dawn Barnes, was joined by council leader Cllr Mark Blake, fellow councillors, council staff and community partners to mark the start of the month, which is an important opportunity to celebrate our LGBTQ+ communities and stand up for equal rights for all.

To mark the start of the month, the council has issued a statement in support of our trans communities in the wake of the recent EHRC Code of Practice on the Equality Act.

Cllr Mark Blake, Leader of Haringey Council, said:

"As we begin the celebration of Pride Month, I want to take the opportunity to restate unequivocally that Haringey is a place for everyone.

"A place where we stand up for each other, celebrate our diversity and share a fundamental commitment to inclusion.

"Haringey has a proud history of LGBTQ+ activism, most notably being right at the heart of the 1980s resistance against Section 28 where black and q***r communities came together to oppose hatred and bigotry.

"This year marks 40 years since the foundation of the Haringey Le***an & Gay Unit, a pioneering service which stood up for LGBTQ+ residents, that the Council faced significant backlash for.

"Haringey Council again today stands firmly in solidarity with everyone impacted by the EHRCโ€™s Code of Practice on the Equality Act, particularly our trans residents who will feel the negative impact of this guidance.

"This new directive risks further segregating and excluding trans people from our communities โ€“ creating uncertainty for organisations and businesses in the borough who want to be inclusive, and giving a green light to those who wish to exclude anyone who they think doesnโ€™t look right.

"I am calling on our local MPs to support efforts to fix the law, so that everyone in Haringey can fully participate in everyday life.

"As the Leader of Haringey Council, I will do everything I can to support, uplift and include everyone in our Borough โ€“ just as we did at the height of anti-LGBTQ+ backlash 40 years ago."

Celebrating our libraries ๐Ÿ“šโœจ

There was a star-studded line-up at Hornsey Library on Saturday for a special celebration day event organised by Friends of Hornsey Library.

Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston opened the event in conversation with our Director of Culture and Communities Kenneth Tharp.

Other speakers throughout the day included Booker nominated author Romesh Gunesekera and writer and broadcaster Baroness Lola Young, alongside craft and storytime sessions showing the wealth of activities available in our libraries.

Mayor of Haringey Cllr Dawn Barnes and newly appointed Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Erin Wolson also joined the celebration.

Thank you to our amazing Friends group for organising this wonderful event. ๐Ÿ™Œ
