Maternal diabetes and ROP: a link we can't afford to overlook via The Ophthalmologist
A retrospective cohort study has found that maternal diabetes is associated with increased risk of retinopathy of prematurity in premature infants, a risk factor that current screening protocols may not fully account for.
This has implications for how we communicate with neonatal and obstetric teams about which premature babies need closer ophthalmology surveillance.

We are delighted to present the WSPOS Consensus Statement titled 'Ocular Manifestations of Cystinosis 2026'.
Our Consensus Statements are developed by the WSPOS Bureau, with agreement reached across WSPOS Bureau Members, Member Societies, Chapter Countries and WSPOS Members.
This statement provides a practical, evidence-based overview of the ocular manifestations of cystinosis, an ultra-rare metabolic disorder that can have significant lifelong effects on vision and quality of life. It brings together the latest literature and expert consensus to support ophthalmologists and multidisciplinary teams involved in the care of affected children.
Inside, you will find guidance on recognising and diagnosing ocular cystinosis, assessing disease severity, monitoring progression, current treatment approaches, multidisciplinary management, and emerging therapeutic developments. The document also includes a concise 'Summary Essentials' section highlighting the key steps for effective ophthalmic management.
The purpose of this consensus statement is not to prescribe a single approach to care, but to provide clinicians with the information and practical tools needed to make informed decisions for their patients.
We hope you find this resource valuable in your clinical practice.
