Public statement: MLA Michael Goss speaks at Decolonisation Committee Regional Seminar
MLA Michael Goss is currently in Managua, Nicaragua, representing the Falkland Islands at the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonisation Regional Seminar.
The Regional Seminar is held annually in advance of the Committee's main session in New York. It brings together representatives of UN member states, administering powers, and non-self-governing territories to discuss decolonisation matters, and provides an opportunity for the Falkland Islands to make its case directly to participating delegations.
Today MLA Goss addressed the seminar, calling on delegates to recognise the Falkland Islands as a self-governing democracy whose people have already exercised their right to self-determination. He spoke of his own family's six generations in the Islands, the 2013 referendum, and the Falklands' continued willingness to be a responsible partner in the South Atlantic β noting that while the Islands delivered on their commitments under the 2024 UK-Argentina cooperation package, Argentina has yet to do the same.
MLA Goss renewed the Legislative Assembly's open invitation to the Committee to send a visiting mission to the Falkland Islands, telling delegates: "We have nothing to hide and everything to show."

Last week, HMS Medway travelled from the Falkland Islands to assist our friends in Tristan da Cunha.
Two medical personnel from the Falklands joined the ship's crew to support their response to the Hantavirus - fantastic to see the UK family supporting one another. π«π°πΉπ¦π¬π§

FALKLAND ISLANDS LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY
PUBLIC STATEMENT
21 May 2026
Legislative Assembly marks anniversary of Landing Day
Today the Falkland Islands marks Landing Day, commemorating the landing of British forces at San Carlos on 21 May 1982.
We remember the courage and sacrifice of those who came to restore our freedom and right to self-determination. Their service, and the service of all who supported the liberation of our Islands, will never be forgotten.
The Falkland Islands Flag and the Union Flag will fly together on Victory Green until 1630 today. The Union Flag will then be exchanged with the Saint Helena Flag to mark Saint Helena Day, which also falls on 21 May β a reminder of the bonds we share with our fellow British Overseas Territories.
